1994 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8

Summary:

Very very nice

Faults:

Nothing yet!!!

Only thing I'm not keen on is the gearbox. When I put the car into drive, there can be a sharp jolt forward. You really have to put your foot on the brake and engage the drive, but sometimes you cannot do that e.g. when in slow moving traffic etc... but still very happy.

General Comments:

Really nice car; smooth, quiet and comfy, bought for £550 FFSH, 6 month's tax, body work is spotless with genuine 63,000 miles on the clock, and one previous owner who was Motability and serviced the car every 5000 miles!!!

Outstanding condition with original unmarked wheel trims. Will serve me, my wife and my new born baby very well.

Looking forward to upgrading certain areas of the car e.g. walnut dash, Ford alloys etc. Absolute bargain, very pleased...

1994 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8 petrol

Summary:

A good car let down by bad dealers

Faults:

Cylinder head needed replacing at 14,000 miles.

Air conditioning failed at 19,000 miles.

Driver's side door lock developed a fault at 26,000 miles.

Brake pads needed replacing at 10,000 miles and again at 35,000 miles.

Engine blew head gasket at 40,000 miles and was completely replaced.

General Comments:

My only serious concerns with the Mondeo were its dealer service and running costs.

Reliability could have been better, but high mileage didn't help.

Was a reasonable bargain at £12,000 for a brand new large hatchback.

Lost its value quickly and traded in at £4,500 three years later.

Performance was reasonable, but fuel bills were costly.

Ride and handling were both good.

1994 Ford Mondeo GLX 1.8 TD

Summary:

Decent for it's age and mileage!

Faults:

Central Locking doesn't work.

Only about 10% of the heated windscreen works.

Needed new rear springs to pass MOT.

Needed 2 new tyres.

Cassette stuck in radio! ;)

General Comments:

When my head gasket went on my ZX TD I needed a cheap car to last a few months, and I knew someone who had this car for £200!

The above faults are obviously down to it's age and mileage, nothing to worry about really.

Car is looking really good for it's age and mileage. It's got a nasty scrape that's turned rusty over one of the rear arches, but I can't really complain about that.

It's a nice car to drive, I can see how it got good reviews for it's handling when it came out, as it feels really quite nice to drive through the bends. Easily as good as the ZX, but leans much less, so probably better infact, and the steering has a good feel to it. Ride is a bit 'jiggly' but I should expect that after the Citroen I suppose. Engine is quite quiet on the inside, but the usual rattly racket from outside! A good deal slower than the citroen was, but not too bad, and it's still got a good lump of torque for getting up hills etc, but you have to get the revs right, as it's very unresponsive below 2000rpm, so, as others have mentioned, it can be very sluggish if you need to get away quickly at a junction.

There's a noise coming from the back when turning right, I assumed it was the springs (had been told they needed replacing urgently) but the noise is still there so it can't have been that. Car is a bit less crashy at the back now the springs have been changed. (£50 for two, £50-ish for fitting)

Seats are comfy and supportive. (took a while to find a good driving position though), heater is very good after a few minutes. HUGE boot which i'll never get close to filling.

Getting around 40mpg (not worked it out exactly yet) for mainly 30-40mph driving and a bit of motorway work, not too bad I suppose, but again, I can't really complain.

Driver & passenger airbags, leccy windows, defunct central locking, manual sunroof...

Quite happy at the moment.

If it lasts three or four month it'll have paid for itself :)

Tempted to use my ZX again if/when I get it fixed up, but happy enough at the moment.

Original reviewer here, PLEASE make sure you check the condition or change the belts, even for peace of mind, when you buy, I didn't and that was the end of the car!

Excellent solid car, would have had it for a while yet if i'd only spent a bit on getting new belts.
