Running costs are low.

1992 Ford Sierra LX 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Very nice car - must be one of the cheapest cars to run today

Faults:

Fuel pump drive pin wore causing fuel starvation approx at 40,000 miles.

Water pump bearing gave up at about 50,000.

General Comments:

Very cheap to run, surprisingly quick, although it doesn't like high revs. No rust whatsoever on this car which still looks like new after 70K miles.

1992 Ford Sierra Sapphire LX 1.8 CVH

Summary:

Cheaper than walking

Faults:

Very little except normal wear and tear from the Starship Enterprise mileage!

Warped brake discs (common problem on these), clutch at 100,000+, rear wheel bearing giving a strange squeaking noise, otherwise normal service items.

Valve guide seals just starting to shown signs of wear, as oil consumption starting to increase, and the odd puff of smoke from cold - not a difficult or expensive job if one finds a good independent specialist.

General Comments:

A fantastic car for the money (paid circa 3K five years ago). 1.8CVH engine reliable, economical but lacking in smoothness. Fortunately quite torquey as it doesn't like to be revved. If the mileage was hidden it would be difficult to tell from driving how many miles car had covered - still returns 35MPG on a long run and seats 4 adults in comfort.

Parts are usually cheap, and car is simple enough to service with a penknife (!) so no need to pay main dealer labour rates.

I hope there's another 100K left in this one yet.

1992 Ford Sierra XR4x4 2.9 V6

Summary:

Underrated car

Faults:

New Spax adjustable lowered suspension at 56,000.

New polypropylene suspension bushes at 59,000.

New offside front driveshaft at 78,000.

New clutch at 110,000.

Had an appetite for compliance bushes, seems to be a Ford design fault because they were the same for all the Sierra's.

General Comments:

Great car, fitted Spax adjustable suspension and really sucked the road.

No problems with the engine or transmission. Drive shaft failure was due to being driven hard, clutch was due to wear and tear. Engine like new at 110,000. I only sold it because of the high fuel costs.

Because of the suspension problem, I replaced the normal bushes with polly (power-flex) ones on my XR 4x4. This is because I managed to total wreck ALL the bushes on the rear end on my old sierra. In 4 and a half years of caning, sorry driving, these have given no trouble and people even comment it seams to be more comfortable.

1992 Ford Sierra GLSi 2.0 DOHC

1992 Ford Sierra Sapphire LX 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Where to start!!??

Bought with 38,000 on the clock.

Gearbox fails on the way home from (not Ford) dealer. Get's "new" gearbox. 1,000 miles later that fails. Pay £800 for new gearbox from Ford dealer. Not covered by useless aftermarket warranty.

2 engines failures in 30,000 miles.

Traded in at a Rover dealer with engine number 3 on last legs.

2 sets of front discs.

General Comments:

Would have been a nice car if reliable, although 26mpg is not acceptable for a 90hp car. Lovely inside and made an excellent Motorway muncher.

Another case of an over reading speedo methinks.

I have 1,8 CVH 1992. caravan and cannot go over 175 kmh. it is noisy, every inch over 3000 rpm takes houres to get. but when it gets there it goes like a bus. I drove 1.6 I (75hp) and it drove much faster and smoother. remarkable difference. Caravan has 156000 km.

1992 Ford Sierra Cosworth 4X4 2.0 turbo petrol

Faults:

Nothing so far but the common fault is the Head Gasket at about 80-90k (72k at moment).

General Comments:

A very quick car but even quicker with a few mods, including exhaust system, K&N air filter, Superchip, etc..

It goes like stink!!

Front brake disks replaced at 56K.

General Comments:

This is the cheapest and most reliable car I have ever had, its now done 78K and runs fine.

I wish the engine was a bit smoother !

Never service Ford cars at Ford dealers, they don't know what they are doing, I take mine to a Toyota dealer !
