1998 Ford Transit 180 Hightop 2.5 diesel
Faults:
New speedometer fitted at 3,000 miles (electric speedo).
Complaints of poor heater performance, cabin noise and excessive fuel consumption.
General Comments:
I had a '94 model of the pre-facelifted Transit diesel, and the cabin noise and heater performance were far superior to this model.
Also as an added bonus, the exterior mirrors of the 1994 model cleared of their own accord due to standard fitment deflectors, which are now not fitted to any current model.
All the above problems were reported to the local Ford dealer, who contacted the technical department of Ford UK, and was advised that cost cutting measures such as removing engine soundproofing on the new model were due to the addition of other equipment such as an RDS radio and drivers armrest, and that they had received other complaints of excessive cabin noise.
An interesting note; when the face lifted Transit was launched in 1995, it was quieter than the current model, and I would happily accept a swap for my old company Transit any day of the week. Basically, if you are in the market for a Ford Transit, choose a pre R registered model (before 1998).
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

1998 Ford transit 2.5 Diesel, turbo, Long Wheel Base and mid roof.
Purchased second hand in 2003, seized the engine when it lost coolant via the water pump seal, temperature indicator reading normal. $7000.00 to replace.
Lucas Epic fuel injector pump leaking, $2210.00 to refurbish and refit.
Air conditioner / heater / fresh air control not working, fuses OK, suspect switch and prone to melting cable joint behind the switch.
Differential Howls at all speeds, seems this is normal.
Speedometer never worked, only shows 60 kph even when travelling at 100 kph (electronics) OK, problem is mechanical within the speedometer.
Alternator replaced, Starter motor replaced, seems this is also normal.
Any parts are very very over priced, and difficult to find a mechanic who will work on them outside of the Ford dealers, who charge high prices by comparison.
Apart from the above the vehicle is great to drive, comfortable, powerful, not over heavy on fuel considering the speed and loads.
Will I buy another?
Not a chance.

I run a '93 facelift transit. All I've had to fix in the 30,000 miles I've had it is the resistor for the heater motor and replace the original Ford clutch at 120,000 miles.
Diff whine comes as standard, and it's slow and rust prone, but for reliability and economy it's amazing.

It has to be said, the pre-smiley transits were far more durable and reliable. before they started faffing about with egr valves, dual mass flywheels, EPIC pumps etc
Bodywork durability seemed also to get worse leading up to the new model in 2000.

All I can say is I cannot agree with your statements. I have owned a 1991, 1995, and now a 2003 transit, and these models have got progressively better. My current 2003 model is fantastic!!! A very powerful yet more economical engine, smoother and quieter. Excellent driving position and ABS to boot!!! The transit is just getting better and better!!!
