1991 GMC Syclone 4.3L turbo

Summary:

Every V8's nightmare

Faults:

Besides normal wear and tear, no serious problems have surfaced. The factory boost gauge is notoriously inaccurate, so an aftermarket one is a necessity. I used an AutoMeter one and installed it on the A-pillar. I have heard of water pump problems with these cars, but so far mine has been fine. Turbo suffers performance drop-off. in drastically hot weather.

General Comments:

This thing is a sleeper. Most people think it's simply a modified S-10. That is, until they get spanked. With 280hp on tap from the factory, upgrades aren't necessary, but this truck responds very well to modifications. With a turbo upgrade and a few other mods, a Sy can easily run low 11's or 10's in the quarter mile. The all wheel drive system is great as well. If at all possible, I highly recommend you snag one of these trucks. They are quite rare however, with just under 3000 made.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I love these trucks, I've wanted one ever since I seen my first one down at the drags doing a four wheel burn out.. I finally got the chance to purchase one two weeks ago. I love it the truck gets tons of attention.. people constantly asking what it is and is it fast as it looks.. I've raced on the street anything from Honda Civics with fart mufflers to supercharged mustangs, grand nationals and corvettes and they didn't know what my truck was till the races were over!! I've even got to race a zr1 corvette which I smoked.. anyway I've only had the truck for a real short time, but its solid. I see only problem in the near future and that's replacing those beefy tires that they came with.

I recommend if you can get one and it's not too farmodified and not beat to hell then pick it up and start having fun.

A Fart Muffler. I just had to laugh 'cause I am going to call 'em that from now on.

Question: How to instantly convert a nice car to a pile of junk?

Answer: Just add a fart muffler.

Hello owner of Syclone

A question about your GMC truck. Is it a high maintenance and servicing vehicle? Because if it isn't, then I'm considering that as a vehicle in future.

I had opportunity to drive one for a few days while my pickup was being serviced. They are very fast, never ran it at drags but on the street you will never get beaten from a stoplight. That 4.3 v-6 with a turbo is a great combo. You can power brake it and when you take the brakes off it will launch like a dragster, and keeps pulling hard to well over 100 mph. I guess I'm lucky not to have got a ticket while I had it, cause I floored it every time I took off.
