1990 Honda Accord 2.0

Summary:

This car was not what I expected from Honda,

Faults:

My speedometer sender broke cost £55 to fix.

Rust has eaten away part of the windscreen frame and rear arches.

Tappets need seeing to.

General Comments:

This car is seriously slow, it makes my diesel look fast.

Steering has no feel to it.

Drinks fuel.

Parts are quite hard to get.

However the inside is quite up to date and no sign of wear, no brake downs yet.

Are you sure you didn't own a Hyundai? Probably where you live it must be hard to buy parts. Here in America its very easy to find Honda parts. Drinks gas? Well, as expensive as gas is where you live, I would be upset every time I had to fill up ($5.00 a gallon)!

1990 Honda Accord 2.0 litre (carburettor)

Summary:

Quite possibly the best mundane-looking under-powered Japanese saloon ever.

Faults:

Battery replaced at 156000 miles. Heater dial became loose and fell off at 100000 miles. Other than that, a perfectly reliable car, only ever needing the odd 'wear and tear' parts replaced.

General Comments:

This car is a revelation when compared to similarly sized cars of the era (Vauxhall Cavalier, Ford Sierra, et al). The cabin is almost up to BMW standards, with soft-touch dashboard, but the odd flimsy piece of trim (in particular, the centre console) lets it down. Handling wise it's all very good, with a bit of race car in the all-round double-wishbone suspension, despite the very light and uncommunicative, if direct steering. Unfortunately, body control is affected a little by undulations in the road (very common in the North of Scotland). But the car, dare I say it, is far more fun than its staid bodywork suggests. The SOHC engine becomes very raspy at high revs (which is good, of course), though you won't be forgiven for mistaking the engine note for an NSX's.. The bodywork is looking very tatty now, thanks in part to my pack-ice-handbrake-turn-antics (I smashed the rear wing in to a tree), but the car, as suggested in other commentary is tank-like in its build and survived bruised, but intact. As a winter car it does quite well, but with normal tyres at the rear, and winter tyres at the front, and without any provocation you can get it to drift sideways. Which is a hoot.. Alas.. the road salt is eating away at its far-from-svelte lines, I hope, once it's un-roadworthy, that that over-engineered SOHC lump just might live on in a stock car..

I completely agree with your comments about drifting. I'm a WRC fan with an Accord. Not a good combination, but it's a good enough car to outlive any other car else on the trails.

1990 Honda Accord ES 4WS 2.2i

Summary:

Ideal!

Faults:

To date only the air con has given any problems, ie. been recharged but has a leak somewhere, however the car has FSH from Honda and is rock steady to drive.

General Comments:

Ideal car for all generations, very worthy of the Honda badge and has typical Japanese reliability.

Mine 1990 4ws UK spec. on 100,000 miles best place for parts is United States (via Ebay), saved me £200 on a re-manufactured Alternator.

Summary:

A reliable, comfortable car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong.

General Comments:

I have driven this car from new, and it has now done 76000 miles. Trouble free motoring. It does not need oil between services.

1990 Honda Accord 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Radiator replaced twice within 18 months for the same fault (leak along top seam). Rear shockers replaced at 45,000 miles and one new battery.

General Comments:

Great for long trips, although back is cramped for adults. Performance is less than thrilling - as is the fuel 'economy' (25mpg around town but better on a long run 30-32mpg). So far we have not been let down on the road. Dealers excellent but expensive. I will probably buy another one - but who knows, I might prefer a change!
