1992 Honda Civic SiRII VTEC B18C from an Integra Type-R

Summary:

The most fun cheap car, with a very good sound

Faults:

A few things, but what do you want from a 16 year old car?

Distributer went on it.

Horn tab in steering wheel broke off.

That's it; would definitely say get one.

General Comments:

Very fast cars, even though I have the Integra engine in. I have been in a few with the B16a engine, and they are very fast, with the rev limit and 8200 rpm, and the sound of the VTEC; makes it a very fun car to drive, but make sure you get yourself a japanese import with no rust and get it wax oiled.

1992 Honda Civic Esi 1.6 VTEC

Summary:

A wolf in sheep's clothing

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

I have been blown away by the speed of this innocent looking car.

The V-TEC engine sounds like a Formula One car and almost performs like one.

Handling is not amazing, but I haven't amended anything, I'm still using the standard wheels and suspension.

Took it to 130 mph and could have got a few more miles if I wanted to.

Seriously considering modifying this car, next step has to be a smart spoiler on the boot.

Recommend investing in a Manual version.

1992 Honda Civic esi 1.6 SOHC

Summary:

As fast as Integra Type-R to 100mph

Faults:

I had to change the piston rings on the car due to the fact it was burning more oil than Saddam, although considering the mileage it was to be expected.

I had to change the exhaust sensor.

General Comments:

The car has an awful habit of eating front tyre's and rear brakes. I think this is due to the small pads on the rear brakes.

It also has a habit of blowing rear lights, on this ESI and one I owned a few years ago. I think this is due to the fact that when the engine is near the limiter the alternator generates a higher voltage thus shorten the life of the bulb or its just cheap bulbs.

Bit of wishful thinking, driven an Integra type R and the Esi doesn't come close.

1992 Honda Civic VTi 1.6 DOHC vtec

Summary:

A good car with an insane engine

Faults:

Cam timing belt jumped two teeth, and the distributor bearing collapsed at 108000 miles (coincidentally, just after Honda inspected the valve clearance).

Excessive front brake pad use after lowering 40mm (under 5000 miles, per set).

Apart from that, generally good.

General Comments:

Unbelievable performance (0-60 in 7.3 sec and quarter mile in 15.2s, tested by me).

After fitting Ferrodo road race pads, braking is seriously good.

Out-handles a Saxo VTS after fitting a Koni shock/spring kit.

Drivers seat OK for me at 6ft 6in, but no space for a passenger behind.

Stupid boot design; all plastic, no shelf?

Ahhhh it's a honda GO HOME!!! buy an American car if you want performance. Buy honda if you enjoy fixing your car on the side of the road.

1992 Honda Civic VTi 1.6

Summary:

An understated hot hatch, with a huge fun factor

Faults:

The distributer bearings failed at 66,000 miles.

General Comments:

Very impressed with the cars performance.

One of the best engines I've ever found in a car, the engine will rev so freely.

The cars handling is very good and only fails if you push to the very limit, but even then the car is very predictable.

1992 Honda Civic VTi (1992 on) 1.6

Summary:

A fantastic, underrated performance car that will put a smile on your face

Faults:

The brakes are generally very good (anti-lock), but are affected by fade after high speed stops.

There is a consistent rattle from the near-side front which my dealer cannot find! Sounds like plastic.

The alloy wheels need to be resprayed.

General Comments:

The car is an excellent all-rounder, helped immensely by its race-track inspired engine which revs happily beyond its 8000rpm redline when asked, up to an 8500rpm limiter.

The handling isn't quite as good as I had hoped, but maybe that's because after 7000 miles I am used to it.

I love the sporty way the sun roof opens over the car, and the metallic blue paint still gains admiring glances after 8 years on the road.

I'm happy with the fact that it has a full Honda service history, not so happy that the last two have cost me over £300 and that they are only 6,000 miles apart.

I did put a K&N filter on it a couple of months ago, it sounded fantastic but was slightly embarrassing. School teachers are not supposed to be boy-racers! I took it off.

Does anyone know of a good chip for it, all I want now is more performance!

A simple way of improving the handling of a Civic (EF, EG and EK models) is to replace the main rear trailing arm bushes with urethane or nylon ones. Makes a big difference. After 100000k's (60-odd thousand miles) the old bushes will probably be quite worn and need replacing anyway.

I have a 1992 Honda Civic VTi that is running 175 bhp. All I have on mine is an air filter and a Civic Type R induction kit. Also, mine has had the cylinder head tuned a little, it's been lowered 35mm all round, and has a strut brace with 15 inch oz racing alloys.

For just over 1500 quid, I have got car which will embarress most sports cars of today, and leave them standing.
