1999 Honda Civic Vti-S 1.8 DOHC Vtec

Summary:

Wolf in sheep's clothing comes to mind!

Faults:

Dodgy passenger window mechanism, think this is on all honda's though. Overheating recently at 49000 due to thermostat. Warped disc's, nothing major though.

General Comments:

This car is seriously rapid through the gears and is glued to the road. One minute it's a town cruiser the next minute the Vtec is screaming at you like an F1 car. Can feel a bit awkward at first getting used to the LSD, but its great fun to drive. Seats are OK driving postition is far better than my civic coupe I used to have. Stereo has 6 speakers as standard, good equipment pack with electric everything and air con. Noisy at speed though and revs high on motorway. Engine is a dream as long as you service it regularly. Buy one you won't regret it!!

1999 Honda Civic VTI 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Extremely quick, understated car

Faults:

Had broken fog lights when bought. Honda replacements to expensive so adapted some off the shelf units to fit.

Interior light switch on back door faulty. Fixed with glass paper.

Kick panel on passenger door fell off. Stuck back in place.

Glove box lid wonky, probably been forced shut with too much junk in the past.

General Comments:

Extreemly fast from stand still. Specs say 8.3 to 60 but it feels a lot quicker than that.

Red lines at 8,000 RPM with 170 Bhp.

Engine looks and sounds nice. Hi-tec.

Interior is a bit basic by todays standards, but it has loads of gadgets.

No CD Player or RDS on radio.

Very noisy inside at cruising speed. Loads of road noise.

No lumbar adjustment on drivers seat.

Good fun to drive hard.

My front fogs have both gone and as you said, they cost a small fourtune, can you please tell me want make and model you used instead?.

I've looked every where, and to no avail.

Cheers. (good car apart from this little problem)

One of the best cars I have ever owned. Very fast and great sounding with a performance air filter fitted. At the point of vtec, the sound is one you won't forget. A great car.

1999 Honda Civic VTEC-E 1.5

Summary:

Sheer class

Faults:

After about a month I noticed a buzzing sound from behind the dashboard and also a creaking sound from the suspension at low speeds.

After a visit to the dealer they said that the buzzing sound was a batch of faulty ignition switches and they booked the car in under warranty.

When I gave them the VIN number they informed me that there was a safety recall on the braking system, the brake levelling valve was faulty (this reduces the pressure on the back brakes under heavy braking and prevents the car from sliding).

I was also informed at the same visit that Honda had changed the manufacturer of the shock absorbers mid production and had still fitted the old bushes, this was causing the annoying creaking noise at low speed. At this point I was horrified thinking that I had bought a "Friday afternoon car".

They had the car for the whole day and rectified all the faults, no problem, no questions asked (and I didn't buy the car from them).

The only minor niggle is the car tends to condensate up pretty quickly, this is rectified by running the air con for a few minutes.

General Comments:

Outstanding dealer service, very helpful, very friendly.

The car now runs like a dream, smooth, quiet, very economical. 45mpg+ normal driving, have a bit of fun and still get 38mpg! Not the fastest car 0 to 60, but a lovely road holder, absorbs all the bumps very, very smoothly.

Compared to Nissan these cars are like Rolls Royces. They are both reliable, but Honda have spent a lot more time on cabin design making the car a very pleasant place to be on a long run.

Just adding a few extra words to my review. The car has now covered the MASSIVE total of 19'000 miles. It is presently in the garage (AGAIN) having a new steering rack and front brake disc's fitted.

When I signed the invoice for the warranty work I noticed the steering rack price, £846 + VAT. Just imagine having to fork out this kind of money after the 3 year warranty has expired.
