2001 Honda Civic Type R 2.0 ivtec petrol

Summary:

Quick, nimble and amazing soundtrack

Faults:

Nothing so far, rear wiper doesn't work, but soon will.

Other than that, all seems good.

General Comments:

Pretty amazing what Honda have done with a 2.0; pick up is good and torque isn't that flat.

Previous car was a Seat Ibiza TDI 130 with over 230lb of torque, and the civic is no slouch. Vtec still surprises you and its acceleration capabilities are phenomenal. It runs a damn sight better on super unleaded and is much smoother.

MPG isn't bad, depends entirely on how you drive it, slow and steady sees 35mpg, drive it hard and somewhere in the low 20s, but it pays off for the sound and get up and go it's got.

Only had it a few weeks, but loving every minute of it.

Good to read a review from someone who has actually driven one of these cars and doesn't just complain about 'low end torque'. Like you say, it is geared so that the car picks up fine in most gears, and you never have to change down to keep up with the traffic. I've also driven high torque TDIs, and just because the Civic isn't flat out until 5500rpm, doesn't mean it's slow below.

Just about the only car that is swaying me away from diesel for my next car, with low 30's being the average mpg for mixed driving. I am willing to sacrifice some economy and you have to factor in the 10p or more difference in fuel at the pumps...

2001 Honda Civic 1.4

Summary:

Easy and cheap to drive

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

A nice looking car. Although nearly 8 years old and replaced by a futuristic looking model, the 'old' style Civic, still holds its own. It is a sleek looking car, particularly the 'hatchback' version

Reliable. I have had this car for over a year and only go under the bonnet to check the levels etc. I had the front pads replaced when I bought the car.

Cheap to run. I put 40 litres into the tank at one time, this fills the 1.4 and lasts me for approx 350 miles. OK, I don't tear around, but for me this is still cheap motoring.

Easy to drive. The clutch is light, the ESR steering is light, the engine is flexible enough to cruise in 5th gear from start to finish. Good all round view, perhaps my only criticism would be, you can't see the front of the bonnet - but that is by no means confined to this car

Very spacious. I brought this car back from Spain with half the contents of my house there. With the rear seats folded down, you can fit the kitchen sink in! There is plenty of room in the front and rear of the car, and still loads of room in the boot with the seats up.

Good factual review.

I agree with this review. A good friend of mine had this same generation Civic. I too like it better than the newer models.

Anyway she loved her Civic until one fateful night when it was parked in a lot beside a VW Cabriolet. The Cabriolet burst into flames and the fire soon engulfed my friend's Civic. It was a total loss.

Since my original report in 2009, I can say nothing has changed. The car has never let me down. It only has minor replacements at MOT time, tyres, wiper blade. Still doing good miles to the gallon. My only gripe, there is a leak around the windscreen, but this could have been caused by the previous owner's phone installation.

2001 Honda Civic Type R 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A bargain performance hatch, but you get what you pay for ultimately

Faults:

Where to begin! Rear wheel geometry misaligned causing lurid tail slides on dry tarmac for no reason. Interior scratched on delivery and centre console silver facing warped. All wheels replaced due to heavy corrosion. Second set already corroded and Honda UK will not replace a second set, even within warranty period. Front struts both replaced due to faulty bushes. Paintwork on both sills and rear spoiler badly flawed and repainted. Bonnet, front wings and front bumper badly stone chipped after only 3 months of ownership. Suspicious of poor paint quality and commonly noted on owner's forums, but Honda UK refused to accept warranty claim. Driver's seat replaced and seat belt mounting replaced twice due to persistent knocking. Been into dealers 6-7 times to sort rattling from dashboard, front door trims and A pillars. Not sorted yet! Gearbox decided it didn't like 5th and locked me out for 2 weeks only to inexplicably resume normality!!! Driver's window constantly jams on the rubber seal when going up- awaiting replacement.

General Comments:

For the money, this is a very quick car, but you really have to use all of the 8000rpm. Below 6000rpm it isn't any faster than most 2.0 litre hatchbacks. Thankfully the shift action is superb and rewards use.

The sound of the engine on full chat is stunning, though it can sound rather rough when driving normally. Not enough of the good sounds reach the cabin, you have to open the windows!

The ride is very jittery at speed and harsh around town. Thankfully the high quality seats cushion you well. Wouldn't like to be a back seat passenger though, with no support and thin cushions.

The steering is ridiculously lacking in feel, but a lot of the road messages reach your feet and bottom so you're not entirely robbed of feel overall.

The handling is very good, but not quite in the Integra Type R's league I'm afraid. Part of this is the high driving position and centre of gravity causing too much body roll, and part is due to the mismatched front and rear damping. The front is good, but the rear lacks wheel travel and is far to nervous to be confidence inspiring. The original tyres (Bridgestone RE080) do not suit the car at all and give very poor wet grip/traction, a lot of tramlining and a high level of noise. I switched to the Toyo Proxes T1-S (going from 205/45 to 215/40 in the process) and all these problems are resolved. A worthwhile change and gives a far better balance to the handling as well.

My car was an early production model and the dealers were not to blame, but Honda UK have been very unsupportive too many of the complaints.

This is an excellent review. I have put a deposit down on one, that is due to arrive in January 2005. Your comments make sense, as a friend of mine has one and this review is unbiased.

Sorry to hear about all the other small problems. I think you will agree the mechanics of the car are excellent, it's just the quality of other associated materials. e.g. paint, plastic, tyres.

Good shout out for the Teg!

I can't decide on a DC2 Teg or EP3 Civic...
