1988 Honda CRX 1.6 16v

Summary:

Fantastic

Faults:

Nothing yet, but I bought it with a few faults.

The sunroof only opens half way, or it comes off the rail.

The fuel pipe has a kink in it I think, so filling up takes a while as it backs up if you try to fill it too fast.

General Comments:

Only had the car 2 months and so far it's been fantastic.

Very light and fast, and it handles really well. Similar to my Mk1 Golf GTI in handling terms, but quicker.

Its got a full Janspeed exhaust system, which sounds great; it reminds me of the BMW M3, that kind of tinny sound when you blast it. It also has an induction kit, strut braces and it's been dyno'ed at 149.7bhp at the flywheel (130 odd bhp standard).

Inside it's comfortable; loads of leg room if in the front, but the back is only suitable for 1 person and for a short time.

I've shocked a lot of people in much newer more expensive cars off the line.

Hope to get some black rims soon, as they're standard at the moment.

"I've shocked a lot of people in much newer more expensive cars off the line'

Another hot dog with the need to "shock" other people.

The CRX VTEC is a much quicker car; leaves BMW 325's, Astra GTE's, and keeps up with all the new hot hatches.

Erm no it won't, the new Civic Type R is only average for speed in its class; quite a few hatches are faster than it, so what does this mean Honda has gone backwards over the last 15 years? No, I don't think so.

1988 Honda CRX Non-Vtec 1.6 DOHC 16v petrol

Summary:

Worth buying at twice the price

Faults:

Rear suspension bushes, and a solenoid from the starter motor.

General Comments:

This magnificent little Honda is a thrill to drive, punching out 130 bhp from its very high revving 1.6 litre engine.

Its suspension geometry is perfectly set up to entertain the most demanding driver.

1988 Honda CRX 1.6i-16 1.6 twin cam petrol

Faults:

Gearbox bearing, cluch has worn out at 80,000 miles.

General Comments:

Amazing performance for a 1.6-litre car, but the stiff suspension, lack of power steering ('88 models didn't have PAS), and razor-sharp throttle response can make town driving a pain. Noisy on the motorway too. My engine only takes 4-star leaded petrol too which (in Ireland anyway) is over 20% more expensive than unleaded.

Your car should run fine on unleaded, may need to alter the timing, but other than that there's no reason to run on leaded.

1988 Honda CRX 1.6i 1.6 injection non VTEC petrol

Faults:

I used to work delivering Pizza's. Very destructive use as it's stop start. It's now on 120K and has broken once (clutch arm). I replaced the clutch at the same time. Fantastic car.

General Comments:

It's the one down from the VTEC so only has 139BHP as standard (VTEC has 156). If your going to buy a mark 2 go for 91/92 then remove the cat. This will add an extra 10hp and not make it smell.

Tidy design but very little storage space. Get the parcel shelf model if you want a decent stereo.
