2005 Hyundai Trajet CRTD 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

Trajet? Tragic more like it.

Faults:

Soon after I purchased it, the gearbox suffered a malfunction that necessitated a complete replacement; outrageous at only 55,000 miles. This took about 4 weeks to arrive from Hyundai.

Recently the gear change cable snapped and had to be replaced. This involves removing all of the air filter unit and electrical links to it. A time consuming and costly job.

General Comments:

The sad thing is this could have been a great car. It's roomy, and all the seats can be taken out, so with the addition of a mattress, it can become a mini camper or mobile bedroom.

It is let down by a truly appalling clutch and gearbox. This seems to be a common problem.

The seats, while removable, are very difficult to put back in, because the bits that locate in the floor are a real struggle to locate in the recesses which lock them in position.

If these cars were so great, then you would see far more of them on the streets than the Galaxys, Alhambras or Sharans, which are very similar to them.

The gearbox was fixed under warranty, so I'm not that much out of pocket, so I might as well keep the car until something else major goes wrong; then it's fit for the breakers.

An update to my review above from over a year ago.

The fifth gear does not engage and only works when you hold it in. If you read my review above, you will see it has had a new gearbox, but it is now on 75,000 miles, only 25,000 miles since it was fitted. The cost of removal of the gearbox and replacement of the fifth gear far outweighs what this piece of crap is worth.

You have been warned.

2005 Hyundai Trajet GS 2.0

Faults:

Good car initially, but now a peanut of a motor.

Rear wear on the shocks, due to high pressure on cornering.

Dials frozen on the interior (look like they've been lifted from an Victorian African diamond mine lift).

Rear boot is too big. Shopping sways around like it's on the high seas. Only useful if you intend to transport a darted Zebra.

Performance is strange. You need to rev it hard, very hard to get any good performance. I tend to hit the limiter very quickly as it prances through 1st and 2nd (doing no more than 40mph).

General Comments:

Overall it's a dog.

2000 Hyundai Trajet GSi 2.0 16v petrol

Summary:

Great

Faults:

The 3rd gear's synchro has gone. Need to shift very gently or push the clutch twice.

Passenger's door doesn't lock with central locking.

Spark plug cables needed replacement (2 & 4 were burnt?).

Reverse lights stopped working despite bulbs replacement.

Front tyres worn out quickly.

Battery keeps going flat after 5 days of no use.

General Comments:

Wanted an MPV and this was a real bargain. The 7 seats are a bit disadvantage as luggage space is small, but still enough for buggy etc.

The car "glides" well. A bit higher fuel consumption, but after all, it's a van with only a 2.0L engine.

Very spacious and comfortable, especially on long runs.

Need higher revs when overtaking or going uphill.

Top speed of 100 MPH is adequate for this kind of car, however acceleration isn't good, and it needs to be downshifted...

2002 Hyundai Trajet

Summary:

Fairly low

Faults:

Front struts on both sides have been replaced twice already.

Gearbox has been taken down and rebuilt twice (under warranty) and it is still not working properly.. it crunches into either 3rd or 4th gear.

Also have major problems with fuel system (diesel) / the car will not start and will occasionally stop dead in the road with no warning lights on dash.

General Comments:

The Hyundai Trajet is an OK car as long as it is still within the 5 year warranty, after that it is a liability.

Also known as a Hyundai Tragegy...
