1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0

Summary:

Unbeatable in severe winters

Faults:

Automatic transmission will not change up from 3rd to top until the gearbox has fully warmed up. I have changed the fluid and filter, but no change. Once the vehicle has warmed up, the transmission changes fine.

I find `feathering` the accelerator better than hard revs until the warm up is completed. I have also locked the 2nd gear, which is fine up to 25 mph, and just travel slow until the warm up is complete.

Radiator leaked when purchased. Replaced at a cost of £126.

General Comments:

I purchased this 96` Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 Limited from a workmate, for the amazing low price of £500.

Naturally I knew fuel consumption was high (14mpg), plus the gearbox fault and leaking radiator. My 3 sons are mechanics so I don't need to get my hands dirty these days.

Apart from the trans fault, this vehicle has been a true God-send over our current winter freeze, the worst in 30 years. Ice and snow won't deter my Jeep, and I have never failed to drive the meager 7.5 miles to my place of work and back. I still have my Merc C180, but it has been snowed up in my drive since before Xmas. Plus, with rear wheel drive, I wouldn't dream of attempting to use it.

No problems with any other part of the Jeep; great (if thirsty) engine.

I only cover approx 2000 miles a year in the Jeep. But it has paid for itself over the last 2 weeks.

Superb vehicle, made in mind for Alaska Winters. Best £500 I have ever spent.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0

Summary:

I wish I'd bought the 6.1 V8!

Faults:

The rad had a leak and failed terminally the day I was due to drop it off at the garage. This resulted in a broken water pump and head gasket. All else has been fine.

General Comments:

Drives well, very comfortable, could use more power though.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited edition 4.0

Summary:

It makes me smile every time I use it and has presence on the road

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with my vehicle.

General Comments:

This car drives effortlessly and is an absolute pleasure. I can park next to the top spec range rovers and still feel that my Grand Cherokee is just as impressive with-out the expense. My passengers always comment on the luxurious interior feel and the comfortable leather seats. My only negative comment is that I am 6'2" and I find the headroom is a little restrictive.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 Limited 4.0

Summary:

A Jeep ain't cheap - but it's worth it

Faults:

Rear lights cut out every now and then - I just wiggle the cable around every couple of months and they work fine.

Loose rubber trim around doors.

Heated river's mirror mists over and controls can stick.

Air conditioning gave up the ghost ages ago.

General Comments:

A few irritating electrical niggles haven't really detracted from what is overall a great 4x4.

It's got every luxury you could want - mine has optional power sunroof and CD stack - and performs pretty good. It's swift off the lights and you can sit on the motorway wafting along at 80 with the engine just ticking over at 1500 revs.

If there was one thing I'd change, I guess it'd be the fuel consumption - it averages out around 17mpg (although the computer did once read 21 - is this a record?) But then you can't go shopping for an American 4x4 and expect it to run on fresh air.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 petrol

Summary:

Niggly, annoying, comfortable, fast 4x4

Faults:

Approved Used Jeep arrived with the following faults:

Blown stereo speakers.

Cracked wing mirror.

Broken luggage cover.

Sand in the headlights.

Gear box skipping third gear. Three visits to the dealer changing ratios. No change. Gearbox pressure sensor changed after a request by me (from web site advice).

Front brake rotor warped (dealer suggested I was driving badly, had done three thousand city miles since purchase???) I have had a Nissan Sunny company car, covered 100,000 driving like a maniac, including off road in Africa no problems with the brakes?

Seat memory failed.

Mirror memory still intermittent.

Front suspension very noisy until the third visit to the dealer.

Brakes still squeak loudly.

Other minor niggles.

General Comments:

Don't go near dealers in the UK. Warranty is difficult to enforce. Expect to at least have niggles, at worst major problems. No apologies forthcoming from the dealer for repeated gearbox and suspension visits under the warranty.

I like the car, has a good engine, comfy, and good on long journeys. Had intended to take it to Africa, but reliability is a BIG question mark. Maybe Toyota next time.
