1999 Land Rover Discovery GS TD5 turbo diesel

Summary:

Crap!!!

Faults:

3rd engine in 2 years. Cracked block, auto gearbox problems.

Radiator replaced.

Steering box replaced.

Both roofs leak.

Many minor problems.

General Comments:

This Td5 is nothing like the 200 or 300 series. Neither of my 200 or 300 Disco's had any problems, even after 200,000 miles. The TD5 has been a headache from day 1. The engine is useless. If I could trade this in for a lovely 300, I'd do it without a second thought.

The car has been maintained without thought of cost, and now the engine has gone again, I have lost patience. It can sit and rot in my garden now unless someone can tell me how to fit a nice 300TDI engine to it. At least my chickens will have a nice new home.

Seems to me like Operator Error.. considering the TD5's are some of the most reliable motors/trucks on the roads.

1999 Land Rover Discovery GS 2.5 turbo diesel

Faults:

Clutch replaced at 27k miles. It did n't fail, but was making a high-pitched sound. Dealer said plates were not aligned and replaced it under warranty.

Water leak around windscreen. Two trips to garage to repair this.

Fuel pump failed at 57k miles. Dealer reluctantly replaced this under warranty. Tried to charge me €600, but backed down after I threatened legal action.

General Comments:

Very happy with it, despite the problems.

The vehicle is a commercial, and because of the low taxation on commercial vehicles in Ireland, it is great value.

Not happy at all with the dealer who tried to charge me €600 to replace the fuel pump even though it was covered by the warranty. They argued that the warranty didn't apply in Ireland!

You're right about dealers trying to worm out of their warranty obligations. The problem is the luxury items to make it a "Kensington 4x4" are always going wrong. Land Rover should stick to the Defender. Bottom line: Rover, an old dog that should have been put down decades ago. Did you notice how surface water hit the screen worse than with a passenger car.

I have a Disco 2 td5 1999.Its covered 90k now and I've been very pleased with it. Its used for both work and family and does both jobs well. The wife moans about the space when opening the rear passenger doors to get the baby it as the space is quite small, other than that its great. I would definately buy again.

1999 Land Rover Discovery GS7 4.0 litre V8 petrol

Summary:

Excellent in all areas apart from poor build quality

Faults:

Nothing. It has been totally reliable.

General Comments:

The Discovery is an excellent off-road car which also offers very good road performance.

The only fault is poor build quality, with notably poor sunroof fit.

1999 Land Rover Discovery TD5 XS-7 TD5 diesel

Summary:

Practical, but poor quality and unreliable

Faults:

Paint resprayed 3 times on inner rear doors (dirt on the seals rubs the paint off)

Rear air suspension failure at 30,000 miles.

Cooling system total failure at 50,000 miles.

Brackets holding 3rd row of seats have broken 4 times (still broken - parts on long term back order)

Rear pull-out luggage cover replaced 4 times (broken connector)

Significant diesel fuel leak at 64000 miles (still not fixed...)

Numerous recalls.

Long term significant sunroof leakage from 40,000 miles (needed numerous attempts to fix).

Anti-roll bar bushes failed at 65000 miles.

Squeaking seats (0 - 10,000 miles)

General Comments:

The most unreliable and poor quality vehicle I have ever owned.

I still cannot quite believe how Land Rover could produce a car so poor. It might be able to climb any mountain, but something will likely go wrong as you drive there along the motorway...

The only good things I can say about it are that it is a practical family car (my kids love it) and useful when the weather is bad.

These good points could apply to any 4 x 4 and are significantly outweighed by the downside of Land Rover ownership. Luckily mine came with a 3 year warranty that has now expired.

Driving one of these cars without warranty cover is just like playing Russian Roulette...

I agree completely with your comments. I bought one brand new and it had 3 things wrong with it straight from the dealer. I dumped it before the warranty could expire because I did not want to get stuck with that lemon. 3 factory recalls in the first 9 months I owned it.
