1997 Land Rover Freelander Di Station Wagon 2.0 turbo diesel
Summary:
Not impressed at all with this 4x4
Faults:
Front brakes cleaned and de glazed at 18,000 miles.
Front anti roll bar links renewed at 18,000 miles.
Rear suspension required modification at 18,000 miles.
Exhaust replaced at 18,500 miles.
Two front tires replaced before 20,000 miles.
Rear brakes cleaned and de-glazed at 22,500 miles.
Reported noise from the ancillary drive belt. After a repair the fault occurred.
Problems with the rear right door locking mechanism.
Problems with rear stowage compartment.
Rear brakes cleaned and de-glazed for the second time at 26,000 miles.
Alternator drive belt renewed at 26,000 miles.
Steering wheel came out of alignment at 26,000 miles.
General Comments:
Good car for the first year.
One and a half years after that and I am very disappointed with the vehicles performance and the Land Rover dealers which I have been to see!
Do not take this car off the road unless you have extended warranty...

Sounds pretty much like a blown cylinder head gasket. Check for water traces in the oil too.
