2001 Land Rover Freelander TD 2 Litre turbo diesel

Summary:

Car is OK, but don't have a bump!

Faults:

No problems with the car itself, but Landrover have got a really serious problem with the supply of spares.

Anything out of the ordinary can take up to a month to locate even if a nationwide search is instigated.

However it took me ages to even buy some rear mud-flaps.

General Comments:

Following a crash when my car was parked and hit from the rear, it took Landrover about 6 weeks to supply a new boot floor.

They stated that it was impossible to pull the spare from a production line because this would mean that a new Freelander would be without a boot floor.

Landrover have had a dispute with their parts suppliers, who have now gone bankrupt.

2001 Land Rover Freelander GS TD4

Summary:

Brilliant

Faults:

Not all options fitted on delivery.

Fuel tank sender failed.

General Comments:

My Freelander has proved to be a very reliable and fun car. Having owned an automatic V8iES Disco for 5 fault free years then a not quite fault free automatic TD5 S 5 seater for another 3 years and knowing someone who has a 1.8 Freelander I wondered if I had made a big mistake. It has proved to be a FANTASTIC little car. It goes places that my Defender 90 will not go, it is smooth, quiet and comfortable. Downside is that for a diesel it is not that economical - in the last year I have averaged 37mpg with a best of 39 on a motorway haul from Southampton to Scotland at least the journey was completed in a single tank of fuel. My TD5 Disco was as economical as this, but was much heavier and less aerodynamic... I'll be at the head of the queue for a 2004 Mk 2...so long as Ford can fit a diesel engine as civilised as the BMW 2.0l 16v Turbo diesel. If not then I'll be back into a Disco.

My Freebie regularly regularly goes off roading, it's only drawback being a lack of ground clearance, it can hold it's own with all the big boys.

Just bought a second-hand 2001 Freelander 1.8 petrol and was scared witless about it, brother in law had one blow up on the motorway in the UK couple of years ago and looked sympathetically at me when I said I'd bought this one! Will keep all posted as to performance etc. Delighted to read this comment - nicest one I've found practically!

2001 Land Rover Freelander td4 ES 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

A very trusty and reliable car

Faults:

I had to call out Land Rover assist once for a hydraulic clutch problem.

Anti-roll link bars have been replaced.

Rear tailgate window was replaced due to heated screen not working.

General Comments:

This is my second Freelander, the 1st also being a diesel, the td4 is far superior than the early gas burner, It has a lot more bottom end torque, it is a lot quieter and smoother to drive.

Any small problems that I have experienced have quickly and professionally been put right by my local Land Rover dealer.

One small complaint that I have is, WHY did they fit a ugly black stereo into a light colored dash when the earlier Freelander had one which blended in well?

2001 Land Rover Freelander ES 2.5 V6

Summary:

An unreliable nightmare

Faults:

The on-board computer handling the firing of the cylinders has persistently malfunctioned, requiring the computer to be re-programmed and reset numerous times.

General Comments:

The re-programming of the computer had to be done 3 times in the first 3 months of ownership.

Each time the service center failed to correct the fault.

4 months after ownership, it went to a different service center which identified that the computer needed to be completely reset.

Since then it has been better, but, nevertheless, it has failed a further 3 times, most recently while abroad, a mere 2 weeks after being serviced.

As I write, the vehicle is enjoying an extended holiday in Europe long after I have returned home.

Total period of ownership, 14 months; period of time the car has been off the road with service centers, approximately 4 months.

The quality of work performed by the service centers has been very poor.

I agree with other comments about the noise at high speeds.

When it is running, it is a fun, reasonably comfortable car.

But the lack of reliability of this car is a nightmare.
