2002 Land Rover Freelander ES TD5 2.0L diesel

Summary:

A great car, no issues, extremely reliable and at home both around town and on the highway

Faults:

Fuse for power window failed once (dealer fixed under warranty)

CD seek button failed once (CD unit replaced by dealer under warranty)

General Comments:

Overall, fantastic car with no issues at all. Engine and automatic transmission are great.

Rather functional dash with typical big "click" buttons - nothing digital here! Part of the "Land Rover" image, but not for everyone.

Handles corners well for a 4x4 although not as good as the Discovery which is surprising (as the Disco is a much bigger car).

TD5 BMW engine is superb with good gas mileage.

Engine noise / road noise loud on motorways over 70MPH.

Great headroom and seating, very comfortable in any seat with plenty of room, rests and pockets for storage.

Lacks boot space depth (although tall) unless the seats are down, will get 2 big suitcases in stood up.

So many accessories you can really make it your "own".

Despite a few niggly problems this is my 3rd Freelander and I have driven this one down to Spain.

Takes forever to get the roof off and then find somewhere to store it.

The car is generally well built.

The car handles very well both on and off road (yes I have had it off road!!).

Seats are comfortable and the interior pleasant, the ride position is excellent.

2002 Land Rover Freelander ES 2.0 TD4

Summary:

A very reliable 4X4 at a very reasonable price

Faults:

There have been several things which we have had to change. These consisting of 2 new rear fog lights, and we had to replace the boot window because it failed to work due to a mechanical problem.

General Comments:

When taking the Freelander for a test drive I was immediately stunned by the performance it produced. The acceleration is near to perfect and the braking after is very responsive.

There is a draw back to the center console, the driver has to take his eyes of the road to open his window, which can cause serious accidents.

2002 Land Rover Freelander ES Td4

Summary:

The best (soft-roader) 4x4 x far

Faults:

Broken interior light @ 24k by my kids.

Broken windscreen @ 12k replaced by Land Rover.

General Comments:

The Td4 ES SW has been my second Freelander, the first being a XEDi Station Wagon which covered 48000 miles.

When you drive the Td4 the improvements over the earlier Freelander are very evident. Build quality has been improved resulting in a much 'tighter' feel to the car, 100% reliability and a squeak free environment.

The car is a joy to drive on a long run at motorway speeds, but is also able to 'mix-it' off road when you get to your destination.

The kids love the space & high seating position in the back. This gives them a view over hedge rows & fences resulting in blissful silence on a long trip.

Economy could be better, with regular long fast-road runs resulting in an average 34mpg. I have finally found a good Land Rover dealer who at least tries to earn the high servicing costs & makes it a pleasure.

More ground clearance and a little less body roll on corners would be nice, but they are probably mutually exclusive so the current set-up is probably the best compromise.

A good all-round, reliable, family transport that can do the business off-road, but also looks good in the executive car-park. Is this the perfect transport solution?

2002 Land Rover Freelander turbo diesel

Summary:

Why I bought a Jeep Cherokee

Faults:

Rattling noises.

Arrogant Dealer.

Short seat base.

General Comments:

I didn't buy a Landrover Freelander, I just made a test-drive in it with a sales person from the Landrover dealership in Inverness next to me (they probably didn't trust me).

As I heard a lot of rattling noises coming from the cheap plastic 1980's dashboard, I asked the sales person what that was and he looked at me and asked "what rattling noise".

As the noise was so loud I assumed he had a hearing problem.

I told him, if I would buy the car, I would return to the dealership if it will develop such a rattling noise, so they can fix it.

His reply was that this was not possible (???).

Then I waited for a quote for my old car for 4 weeks and after I called them I was told that they weren't interested in my car so they just didn't call back.

I bought a Jeep Cherokee (Liberty) instead, the Jeep dealer was very friendly, gave me a very good price for my car and the Cherokee is better built, better looking and bigger than the Freelander and most important: no rattling noises.

Let's be fair & honest about it, the reason why you bought a Jeep Liberty instead of Land Rover was because Jeep offered you a bigger discount. Also, they told you something you like to hear, for example they gave you more money on your trade-in at your expenses of not giving you a decent discount on the new car. Remember, 1 + 1 always equals 2.

Personally I would rather deal with a Sales person who told me everything up-front & realistic (though I may not like to hear), rather than sweet talking me and only tell customers what they'd like to hear.

There is no comparison between the two trucks. It's just like you want to buy Hugo Boss suit for the price of a suit at J.C. Penny, which isn't going to happen.

Remember, you could only "buy wrong" but the dealer never "sell wrong".

Good luck in your Jeep Liberty. By the way I used to own a Jeep Grand Cherokee, I only had it for 34 month, I hated it and I got rid of it. Quality was bad, a lot of rattling noises, a lot of cheap plastics, more than the Land Rover. I swore that was my first Jeep and also my last Jeep.

Regards,

Edmund
