1991 Mazda Eunos Mk 1 S 1.6

Summary:

A joy to drive and own that gets admiring looks from everyone that sees it

Faults:

Problem with the air control unit not working properly, promptly fixed by the garage purchased from. Not so much a problem with the car, but with some low life who decided to slash the roof and try (unsuccessfully) to steal the CD / Radio. A few people have commented here about poor fuel economy, but no matter whether it is driven hard or gentle we get between 32 to 36 m.p.g. which I think is excellent.

General Comments:

The car is a Japanese import and as such came with a lot of accessories which you would not get on a UK model, after market alloys, stainless steel exhaust system etc, the Insurance was only £269 fully comp with a protected bonus, it is a pleasure to drive and I will without doubt upgrade to a newer model in a few years time.

1992 Mazda Eunos 1.6i

Summary:

A good drive with a unique style

Faults:

Nothing as yet, a friend told me Mazda offer a five year paint warranty, however there are a few stone chips.

Hood needs love and attention.(I greased the zip with furniture polish).

General Comments:

I think the phrase sports car is used to widely here. The peugeot 1.6 205 GTI's are quicker.

It is, however, a seriously fun car that gets admiring looks form those not in the know. Get one for the summer 5-6k and you can't go wrong.

Since when have sports cars been all about speed? Just because a eunos isn't as fast as a peugeot 205 GTI doesn't mean it's not a sports car - but the peugeot certainly isn't!

I agree with the first comment. I blew a Peugeot 205 away at the lights by using the hold button on my Automatic. Speed is relative.

As long as you've got light weight, two seats, direct steering and a nicely balanced rear wheel drive chassis, you can have more fun than in any front drive hot hatch, however good it is. I will admit Peugeot achieve astonishing things with front wheel drive, but it is, and always will be a compromise.

The Eunos/MX5 has all the essential ingredients of a sports car, and is so much more involving than any hot hatch. The essence of what a sports car is about, in that it begs you to drive it for the sake of it, and drive it hard.

Bought my '92 Eunos (2litre V6, auto) at 170,000km just over a year ago. Last owner had the trans fail on him (3rd one that failed in the car) and it was replaced with a '96 Telstar auto, no sign of any trouble. Only things that have been problematic were door seals failing, LH rear caliper seizing on-sticking handbrake lever bush in the caliper, not needing a complete overhaul at $800 as suggested by local brake shop!-leaking front rocker cover gasket ($50 at local Repco dealer and done myself) and failed front sway bar link, replaced at home for $45. Brilliant to drive long distances, gearbox needs to be in Hold around town, but on the road great to drive and very comfortable. Now at 225,000km and going well. 10km/litre a little thirsty, but overall worth it for the distance driven every week.

I've had the 205 GTi and loved it, but I reckon I'd murder one on a country road in the Eunos. Bizarrely the only car that gave it a run for it's money on the twisties today was a 4WD little Subuaru Justy - those things corner like they're on rails.
