Faults:

Nothing so far!

RX7s only come with a 1.3L.

5th Aug 2001, 16:25

Yes, but they have TWO of them. 1.3+1.3=2.6!

When they say you have a 2.0 engine do you say. Well I have 4 pistons. It must be a 8.0 liter. Come on now guys.

They are common sense. No rocket science.

The Third Gen RX7 is a Twin Turbo Rotary not Twin Rotary Twin Turbo, there is only one engine in any stock RX7 out there. A 2.6 litre rotary engine would be so inefficient on fuel that nobody would even want to own one. Not only that but the engine would be so large the front end of the car would need to be extended a full foot or more just to accommodate it.

Do your research before you just assume.

1981 Mazda RX7 Sports 2 Wankel Rotary petrol

Faults:

Pop-up headlamp motor burnt out, exhaust cracked in front of rear box, radiator leaked, and a bad earth kept draining the battery (all this over 6 months, though the car was 15 years old at the time).

General Comments:

A bit unconventional and not the fastest of cars but a thoroughly enjoyable car to drive. Mazda should have kept making the original RX-7 models instead of the MX-5.

1991 Mazda RX7 Turbo II Cabriolet 2.6 turbo rotary petrol

Faults:

Replaced clutch at 110,000 miles. Engine had been replaced at about 80,000.

Convertible roof has small tears at 'C-pillar' at the base and the top.

General Comments:

Fast, comfortable and reliable. More than makes up for 20mpg (at speed, worse at low speeds!)

Dealer servicing is a joke - go to a specialist or DIY.

Not cheap, but RoTechniks in Graveley near Reading make it more fun and cheaper than a Cav, I mean Beamer.

All FC3 and FD3 Rx7s have a 1.3L rotary. The only larger was the 20B engine in the Cosmo, which has 3 654cc rotors, making 1962cc, just short of 2 liters. The LeMans-winning 4-rotor, which is a race-only engine, would be the only potential 2.6 liter Mazda rotary.

Hey there people. I see its been a while since anyone replied. I just wanted to say that my Mazda runs great, but has a problem with heat and burning oil, maybe I'm just driving too fast, ha ha. over all its cool besides the gas.

1991 Mazda RX7 "Savanna" (Cabriolet) 1.3L rotary turbo petrol

Faults:

So far nothing, with the exception of a couple of stone chips and an unwanted pregnancy at traffic lights. It does consume more petrol than I bargained for - it would probably be cheaper to stuff the tank with £5 notes, except over 3800rpm, when £10 notes are required.

General Comments:

I am in rotary heaven. All cars should have one. The only drawback to this vehicle is that it never came in my favourite colour, which is British racing green. But I get to see all the green I can handle when I pull up alongside an MX-5.

The secret, by the way, is to avoid putting synthetic oils in them. That's why the guy I bought it from said that you can only get 75,000 miles out of the engine, while in the States they regularly get 150,000+.

Yes, I will be doing all the maintenance on it myself :)

Mine is a Savannah GT Coupe... And it's factory British Racing Green... or very close to it.

The reason the US version gets 150,000 miles before a rebuild is because we do not get turbos as in Convertibles. Its not even an option. Otherwise this is a great car and lots of fun to drive.

But really one of the reasons for a poor running rotary is the wrong oil. some synthetics will work, its all about the ash content in the oil. Less ash is better, since some oil is injected into the engine a lot of ash can cause build up etc.
