1980 MG BGT 1.8

Summary:

Go out and buy a good one you will not regret it

Faults:

Usual MG problems i. e clutch release bearing, suspension bushes needed replacing, dreadfull lucas electrics!but the car has never let me down (yet) and seems to give plenty of warning of part failure.

General Comments:

This car has been the best car I have bought since the midget 25 years ago

I only bought the GT as a weekend toy, but would rather drive it than my Honda accord "euro box"

Its not particularly quick, but feels like your flying mainly due to the low seating position and solid ride

Finding a good rust free car is a mammoth task so be prepared to look at loads of rubbish.

1978 MG BGT GT 1.8

Faults:

Broke down twice, basically not used to manual choke so I flooded the carbs! Otherwise just your average 21 year old car.

General Comments:

For all of you who thought motoring was about userchooser options, may I recommend a blast in an MG.

OK they're crude and noisy, but they restore your sense of fun and enjoyment of real motoring!

Wait till you meet another MGB GT coming the other way, you'll wave and feel a kindred spirit with a complete stranger, try that in a BMW.

1974 MG BGT 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Quite a bit, but all parts available, and actually enjoyable to work on. Great to modify, too.

General Comments:

Best support sports car in UK, makes you smile to drive it. Makes the F look plain safe and dull.

1979 MG BGT 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Had car 18 months : Exhaust, Rear axle and Suspension, Heater valve, Accident

General Comments:

Athough I have broken down 6 times in that time it's one on the best things I ever purchased. This MG is not garaged for the winter it's used every day and it's a joy to drive.

A real car.

1967 MG BGT Coupe 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Rust is the biggest problem (at 30 years what do you expect?). Steering rack has just been replaced and brakes tend to stick when new. The cylinder head cracked last year but was not difficult to replace.

General Comments:

Leaking front section means you get wet feet but that's all part of the fun of owning a classic. If buying a classic check for availability of cheap spares (MGs are very well catered for) and that the car has a bulging file of history - the more you know the better!

This is a fun, classic sports car for anyone who hates the plastic bubble cars of the 90's.
