1999 MG TF MGF 1.8 1.8
Summary:
A stunning design; catastrophic reliability
Faults:
Fan electrics failed, causing the car to overheat.
The catalytic converter collapsed.
Cylinder head needed replacing at just 25,000 miles.
Hydrolastic suspension failed twice.
Fragile interior trim; dashboard switches often fall off.
Front brake disks warped.
General Comments:
Quite how MG-Rover get away with selling this car remains a mystery.
The sharp styling adds showroom appeal, but the build quality harks back to the bad old days of British Leyland. Reliability is woeful.
Even the driving experience is disappointing. While the K-series engine gives excellent straight line acceleration, the soft suspension is likely to make you sea-sick on corners.
Break-down cover is an essential option.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

Yours is an MGF, not a TF. Similar to look at by very different cars. For starters, the TF has conventional coil suspension, whereas your MGF doesn't. Also on the TF the side panel is one piece, which aids structural rigidity. There are many other differences as well, too many to list here.
Many of the build quality issues have been sorted out with the TF, it feels a far better car even before your drive it.
