1996 Mitsubishi Carisma GLX 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A fantastically comfortable and absolutely reliable car

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

The Mitsubishi Carisma must be one of the finest used family hatchback/saloon money can buy. The car has fierce depreciation, but I cannot understand why. I've driven literally dozens of different hire cars over the last eighteen months in connection with my job and only one of them compares to the build quality, comfort and frugality of this car and that was the Honda Civic. As a used car this is an excellent buy.

I have a Carisma 1996 GLXI. Wonderful car and is absolutely reliable. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any problems with their gearbox?

The Carisma gearbox is French, Renault 19, I think, and normally a very good box, despite its origin. But the bushes on the gear linkage are known for wearing out quickly. This can be expensive to replace @ around £60-70. Worn bushes will make it difficult to select gears. 2nd is the bugger on mine. Saying all that, I have had to replace my whole gearbox… and I can’t remember why… I picked a second hand box up for £250 and it took me 8 hours to change it, 2 hours trying to remove the speedo cable…. “remove split pin and pull cable out of slot” … yes, 2 hours & Lots of WD40!!!
