1992 Mitsubishi Colt GTi 1.8

Summary:

If you can find one, buy it, hang on, and sleep well!

Faults:

As the car is a 1992 model (getting on a bit) and I bought it from the North (lot of rain) the underneath of the car was quite rusty. Subsequently, I've had to change the exhaust (OUCH!) as one section was only available from a dealer for £260!!!

My girlfriend was filling up one day and noticed petrol coming onto her feet! The filler pipe going to the tank had corroded through.

Other than 2 oil changes in 2 years or so, the car is one of the most reliable I've ever owned.

Parts though are frankly stupidly priced from the main dealer, considering the age of the car, and because they are a rare car, second hand bits are hard to source.

General Comments:

In my opinion, this is one of the most handsome of all the nineties superminis, with lovely smooth lines and rounded rear end. With 138 bhp as standard in such a light car, do you think this car is quick, YOU BET! I beat a Merc CLK Kompressor from the lights not so long ago, he was very very surprised.

The interior is a little plasticky and the seats could do with more support, but that's about it. If you like a sporting drive, go for lowering springs and uprated shocks, makes a world of difference.

Very good, check the downpipe flexibraid as can be expensive to replace.

Cracking car, mine is used as a track car and shames a lot newer posh marques!!!

1993 stripped Colt GTi 1800 twin cam.

Check out the Proton Satria GTi as it's the same car.

1992 Mitsubishi Colt GLXi 1.6

Summary:

Total death trap. Wonderful!

Faults:

I smashed the pig off the road backwards at about 70 mph, over a concrete post, through a wire fence and into a field, and it just started no problem, sweet as a nut.

The beast did start to fall apart after that though; the exhaust was wrecked, no electrics, except lights on the dash board started coming off. It leaked, then the suspension collapsed like a diseased lung.

Absolutely no engine problems though, but it started leaking fuel, and of course wrecked my driveway. Hilarious.

General Comments:

Loved the dog, it was a riot. Everyone who drove it said it must have a twisted chassis, but I didn't care, I just think it had character.

It wasn't very nice when it tried to kill me though, but fair do's, I had the thing crushed into a cube. It's a coffee table now.

This is an excellent review.

1992 Mitsubishi Colt GLXi 1.6

Summary:

Pocket rocket

Faults:

Electric window broke due to stupid friend leaning on it whilst I was putting it up!

Sunroof doesn't slide due to not using for a while!

Overall extremely reliable keep the oil fresh and servicing is a must!

General Comments:

This car is awesome, its fast, it turns heads, its smooth and reliable what more could you want?

Comes with all electrics including central locking just add alloys a sound system and polish and your ready to go. The sweet 4g92 engine revs freely and delivers good power. Because its light it grips the road and for a 1992 car is extremly agile and poised.

1992 Mitsubishi Colt GTi 1.8 16v

Summary:

Worth the odd expense for the overall cheap performance

Faults:

The exhaust was quite rusty and developed a few holes. Nobody was able to find the correct exhaust for the 1.8 GTi from 1992, even my trusty garage I always go to. Kwik Fit had to turn me away cos they couldn't get the parts! I've had a stainless steel exhaust fitted now, as it worked out cheaper and also gives it a bit more power.

General Comments:

The parts for this car are quite expensive, and can be difficult to get hold of for this model. On the plus side, the car is generally very reliable, so it's not too often that you have to spend money on it anyway.

Despite it's age, the interior is in almost perfect condition, it hasn't faded or worn. The seats are firm and solid, but very comfortable. My boyfriend is fairly tall and has back problems, but finds the car very comfortable to drive.

I also love the high engine note and boxy look to the car (old shape), which gives it that cool air of Japanese efficiency!

Also, it hasn't rusted yet.

1992 Mitsubishi Colt GLi 3door 1.3i petrol

Summary:

Truly awful to drive, yet very reliable and cheap to run, very expensive parts

Faults:

The front disks needed replacing and couldn't get them anywhere that would fit. I had to go to Mitsubishi and paid £190 (ridiculous price).

Nothing else has gone wrong and many miles have been covered.

General Comments:

This car is very very reliable an quiet, but horrible to drive.

The driving position is terrible. we are both 5foot 6 and have to lean back to lower the visor. The seat is like new yet I get a bad back every time I drive more than 20 miles.

The power steering is var to strong and I get no feedback from the road surface so can't judge the grip till the last minute.

She is in showroom condition yet the handling is truly awful, no it isn't the tyres as I've tried Yokohama (not bad) Uniroyal (awful) Falcon (much better).

My girlfriend has spun in this car and she drives well and carefully.

This car is very reliable and cheap to run (45-50mpg), but insurance is quite high.

I would only recomend this car to people that want reliability with no capability from the car.

I can honestly say I've never hated driving a car as much as this one and I am used to older cheaper cars.

If she wasn't so reliable I would get rid tomorrow.

Have you all been driving the same car. Mine is an R reg colt and it's amazing, handling is perfect and the traction couldn't be better. Great cars for rallying. the best acceleration I've seen in a car!

I'd have to agree that above review is nothing like the Colt I drive. Great response, excellent handling and over all good car.

The plonk got the year wrong, his is the new 2000 colt, not the fun to drive 1992 one.
