1998 Mitsubishi Galant GLS 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Good looking car

Faults:

Quite a few electronic issues. Temp gauge sometimes didn't work. Windows failed or only worked sometimes. Alternator and battery had to be replaced twice.

Usual mechanical wear and tear parts replaced as the car aged (brakes, suspension, exhaust, etc).

Interior quality surprisingly poor, storage area below the radio collapsed. Door trim peeled away.

Generally reliable however, I looked after the car well. Every service in my ownership.

General Comments:

This Galant that I bought used in 2005 proved to be a reliable but typically dull Japanese car.

The only thing that stood out was its looks. It was a very sharp looking car in dark red. Those front headlights and the rear boxy shape with sharp lines was just stunning to be honest. I put on bigger alloy wheels as the originals were too small and the new wheels transformed this cars looks even further.

Inside was a different story. Very dull, grey, typical 1990s Japanese interior. Seats were comfortable however and looked OK.

2.0 engine with the automatic had decent power and did around 32 mpg, about right for a petrol automatic in this size of car. It was OK to drive but not exciting or anything.

I scrapped it in 2014 due to needing too much work and money put into it to justify on an older car with higher mileage. But I enjoyed most of my time with it and would love another, preferably a VR4 version! Very rare car nowadays in any form.

1998 Mitsubishi Galant glsi 2.0

Summary:

Hassle free motoring with all the extras

Faults:

Brake judder when I got it. I was going to replace disks & pads, but the disks were expensive for this car so I just replaced the pads to see if it would help. I was surprised as it solved the problem. Apart from that no faults.

General Comments:

This is my third Galant and I have went past 100,000 miles on 2, 97,400 on this one and looking good for plenty more. The reliability of these cars is great.

I see from USA reviews nobody likes these cars (lemons) but I think European Galants must be a different car altogether.

Comfortable, spacious & plenty of power.

The only drawback is fuel consumption 350 miles on a full tank is not great.

1998 Mitsubishi Galant 2.5

Summary:

A slow, but reliable and economical cruiser

Faults:

Large depreciation - especially as Mitsubishi keep slashing the prices of new cars.

General Comments:

It's a bit slow for a 2.5 V6 - 165bhp - but it genuinely delivers an average of 35 MPG under a wide variety of driving styles. That's impressive. I bought this car as it was rated the most reliable in the UK - and it certainly is.

Which 2.5's are you comparing it to. I personally think they are quick for the weight of the car and the fuel economy looks to be superb for a v6.

I have a 98 galant ES and its amazing that I bought it for $15000 new and now they offer me $2000 to trade it in.

Vehicle value depreciation. It happens. I bought a 98 a few months ago for $2000. I bought my last car at employee pricing and 6 months later, I took well over a $1000 loss on it, which is pretty bad considering I got it for nearly $3000 under sticker.
