2004 Nissan X-Trail SVE 2.2 dCi

Summary:

Not Nissan's best

Faults:

Turbo, intercooler, bearings, various other expensive mechanicals.

Interior not very hard wearing - seats were torn after less than 100K miles.

General Comments:

The X-Trail was a large, comfortable, spacious vehicle, but it was expensive to repair and not very reliable.

I had it six years. Spent a lot of money on it, and it was simply not worth it. It's what you call a "soft roader" - you have to be careful with it, it is not a hardcore 4x4 for everyday hill climbing! More like a glorified large family car.

Not great to drive, pretty boring. Not very fast or economical even for diesel.

Hard to say much more, didn't like it, didn't hate it, just a pretty mediocre experience. These SUV's are overrated.

2004 Nissan X-Trail Sport 2.2 dci turbo diesel

Summary:

Seriously flawed in the turbo department

Faults:

Turbo and inter-cooler went at 12000 miles.

Turbo went again at 62000.

At 12000 miles, as I drove in for my first service, the turbo started whistling and resulted in a new turbo and inter-cooler, followed by 3 or 4 returns to change boost valves.

All was fine till 62000 miles, and yes it's the turbo again.

Nissan, as with other reports, wanted nothing more to do with it other than to empty my account at their prices.

My advice is to get on the Internet and shop around.

I had a reconditioned unit fitted for less cost than Nissan wanted for the turbo alone.

Yes they have a problem with this, it's obvious from the reviews, but once that warranty is out, make no mistake, Nissan won't want to know!

General Comments:

Bought for its good reviews.

Comfy and reasonably quick.

My X-Trail's intercooler developed a leak, which Nissan repaired... that is the sum total of the problems I had. Could it be that you are not driving it right? I seldom let my X'y go above 3500 revs; the rev band being between 1800 and 3000 RPM.

2004 Nissan X-Trail Sport 2.2 dci

Summary:

Nice car, but don't buy

Faults:

Turbo developed loud whistle. This has been problem too many X Trail owners. Wrote nice letter to Nissan asking for some assistance even though out of warranty. No help forthcame. Dealer cost new turbo £1007 inc vat plus labour. Have managed to buy new turbo for £650 from alternate dealer. This turbo problem can cause engine to blow. Concur with many other owners. Do NOT buy a diesel X Trail and don't hope for help from Nissan.

General Comments:

Very comfortable and economical for a 4 X 4.

I have had a petrol and then a diesel Nissan Xtrail (2004 2l DCI). Touch wood, it has been a great car and 'relatively' economical.

The children love it in the travels. No real off road done yet, but it has been very useful for the ad-hoc moving requirement.

I would like better fuel efficiency, but get 26-31mpg on the diesel. Petrol was horrendous.

This is a good car overall. I had to change the intercooler recently, a fair amount of oil spray was on the on hoses.

Looking at my boy racer next, middle age crisis and all that.

2004 Nissan X-Trail Sport DCI 2.2

Summary:

A potentially good car, marred by serious defects, and let down by inadequate customer support

Faults:

After 3 months, the engine lost power and smoke billowed out. Dealer said it was the turbo and it was replaced under warranty.

About a year after, the same thing happened and the turbo was again replaced under warranty.

Another year later, much worse problems. The car was stalling when stationery and at low revs, and stalling when turning into roads etc. In addition to this, the engine suddenly lost power and the only cure was to switch it off and restart it. Also there was a burning oil smell. Went to garage who had it for almost 2 months! They said they could not find out what was wrong with it. Eventual conclusion was the turbo again, which was once again replaced under warranty. I was not convinced though as car did not seem right when it came back, and the symptoms had not been the same as original turbo problems.

Lo and behold, 3 months later the same problems again, loss of power and stalling. It has gone in the garage again and they are now saying it is the intercooler and turbo, and I am being told I have to pay £2200! as it is not under warranty. It was only repaired three months ago. I am convinced the intercooler problem must have been present then. I'm livid to say the least.

General Comments:

On a positive note, the car looks smart and is a good drive.

The interior is good, and it has some well thought out ideas like the boot area that is very easy to keep clean.

It is badly let down by these serious problems.

I have owned three Nissans (2 Terranos and 1 X-Trail), and always found them good value for money. I would probably have bought another X-Trail had it not been for these problems.

The service from the dealer has been acceptable, but they are governed by the Nissan warranty issues.

I have found from personal experience, the Nissan customer service to be unhelpful and unsympathetic, particularly after I encountered serious problems after only having the vehicle a few months. This alone would put me off ever buying another Nissan.
