1993 Peugeot 106 XND 1.4 diesel

Summary:

Superbly cheap/comfortable runaround

General Comments:

60 ish mpg so I get at least 500 miles from a £25 tank of diesel. AMAZING. Very quiet inside as well. Can't go that quick round corners though as the suspension can't handle it. you'll need to change down to third on steep hills and it doesn't have much grunt, but fine on the motorway at 75mph. Cheap tax and insurance.

I was in a 106 with a 1.5 diesel engine, and it sounded strained at 60, on the motorway I could see that it was going flat out at 70, with only 2 adults and 2 kids in it, I don't think it's a car designed for the motorway, at 70 it felt like it was about to explode, and add to that the overly soft suspension and light weight, it got blown about by the wind terribly, I think it's unsafe for motorway use - I was certainly continually scared in it... that said, you cannot argue with 60 MPG, so probably good for students or city drivers just people who are more brave than me!

1993 Peugeot 106 Key West 1.0 diesel

Summary:

Unreliable little diesel

Faults:

The gear linkage came off 2 hours after I bought it. I got it fixed, but an hour after getting it back from the garage the gear linkage came off again. A more experienced mechanic went to work at it.

2 weeks later my head gasket blew.

As well as that the suspension had to be welded.

That was August, it came out of the garage in December, minutes after brought it home, it started leaking very bad and now I must fill it with a jug of water 3 times a day.

The color of the 106 Key West is bright sickening metallic green.

General Comments:

I'm a 14 year old and the latest craze for Irish teenagers is cars. My friends mostly have Fiestas, I was allowed to get a small diesel car and after scanning the newspapers I found a 93' Peugeot 106 1.0 Diesel for only 415 euros, but no MOT, not that I needed it. If only I got a better car, it has cost me over 1000euros fixing it, it is very unreliable, never again.

What is the legal age to drive in Ireland?

I forgot to mention that the inside of the windscreen is more like the outside, it gets very wet, there is algae going on the ceiling and the little storage compartment in the back seat is full of water. The driver' seat won't go forward so I have to reach for the pedal.

The legal age is 17 but we all drive in the fields (as many Irish people are farmers!)

Small diesel engined hatchbacks are not designed for racing around fields.

What would you recommend me? I got a 92' Land Rover Discovery 2.0TDi 7 seater as well from a relative. But I've decided to replace the Peugeot with my friend's Lithuanian registered Audi 100 2.5TDi.

I have a 106 diesel which I've had since Aug 04 and I've had hardly any problems with it! The globe plugs had to be replaced as they were so old and the hinge pin on my door came out, other than that its been fine!

Every car is different!!!

I think you get what you pay for with field cars. The 106 will blow it's headgasket if it's not properly looked after. Was there water in it? Also, it's either a 1.0 (maybe 1.1?) petrol, or a 1.4 diesel. They didn't make a 1.0 diesel.

Also, it's hardly the latest craze here. We've been at it since probably your dad was your age. ;)
