1994 Peugeot 106 XSi 1.4i

Summary:

Bargain B-road thrills!

Faults:

Drivers seat is working loose.

Intermittent clicking from suspension.

Brakes judder.

General Comments:

The handling of this car is simply amazing! A light tail makes it feel a little twitchy and nervous, but the payoff is an amazing ability to turn into corners, and great adjustability on the throttle. It can bite though - this is a very easy car to spin if you take liberties with it.

The steering is very accurate and offers plenty of weight and feedback, although can be heavy when parking.

The engine is not particularly powerful, but revs keenly round to the red line. It delivers fairly decent performance, but you need to keep it over 4,000 RPM to get the best out of it.

Although stable at speed and surprisingly comfortable, low gearing spoils the car's long distance suitability.

1994 Peugeot 106 XSI 1.6

Summary:

More fun than a bath full of jelly

Faults:

The clutch went on it, nothing too serious though. Cheap to replace.

General Comments:

An excellent car, well worth the money. Out handles a lot of the cars on the road, goes forever, well nippy and a beautiful car to look at. Best to spend a little extra to get a 1.6, the 1.4 is tinny, the interior in the 1.6 is far nicer and there are nicer touches.

Quick comment. The other dull wits in this area with 106's shouldn't of even looked at this form to fill it in. I mean to say, anyone with half a brain cell will know that the 106 Rallye 1994 is either a 1.3 (rare if it is) but probably a 1.6 cos the engine was a 1.3 until K, when the cat was added the 100bhp was then cut down, so the 1.6 lump was used and was an excellent engine.

Then there is the bloke who has a 106 XSI 1995 which is 1.6 16v? eh? the year of 1997 brought the 106 GTI which is the 1.6 16v, XSI are all 8v... Sorry to pop your bubble..

Wrong, the 1.3 engine stayed until 95 when it went out of production (due to the emissions failing), the 1.6 Rallye never came until 98. However both have cats - the 1.3 started on a 93 L. It was the 1.4 XSI that could be bought with either a cat or without - hence came the 1.6 due to power loss!

Agree with the comments above, but having driven both cat and non-cat 1.4 XSi's, the power loss is negligible.

The 1.6 was introduced to make the car more driveable. It has barely any extra power over the 1.4 (104 HP vs 100 I think) but has more torque over a greater range. This gives it more effortless performance, and makes it slightly quicker.

No they haven't the first pug with 16v was the gti.

I think you'll all find this useful! The 1.4 xsi came in two types! 100 bhp and a 95 bhp! The 95 bhp has a cat on it due to emissions, hence the other one has 100bhp! The 1.6 xsi was produced as the weights of the 106's went up due to the face lift, as more weight was added as the shell was strengthened.

1994 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.4

Summary:

A amazing handling, high speed buzz bomb, that's a pain in the bum when you need to fix it

Faults:

Gearbox, clutch, starter motor, head gasket, 2 cooling pipes, engine mounting, drive shaft.

General Comments:

A really wonderful car to drive, when that little engine comes on cam it's fantastic, a real buzz.

But it has a problem - it's very fragile, and expensive to fix, a rubber cooling hose was £70, and every part because it's particular to that model costs on average at least twice as much as the standard 106, I got the gearbox reconditioned and that cost £500.

This expense is not just for big items but small ones too e.g. spark plugs (and that's a servicable item).

The engine is actually a 1.3 1294cc to be exact.

1994 Peugeot 106 XR 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Sporty, reliable but NOT roomy

Faults:

One or two niggles such as interior trim coming adrift. Otherwise utterly reliable - being a used car previously used as a Peugeot lease car ensured good service history.

General Comments:

The 1.4 has good performance but I would have expected better fuel economy. Parts are easily available here in the West Midlands. Some people might find the cabin too cramped. The equipment levels are good and the car feels quite stylish.
