1997 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 16v petrol
Summary:
A fast, refined hatch, that should not be underestimated!
Faults:
I can genuinely say I have never had a problem with this car, it has been absolutely perfect since the day I bought it.
General Comments:
When I first got the car my impression was that it was a very refined hot hatch.
The handling is spot on, it seems the more you push the car, the better it responds.
After owning a Clio 1.8 16v I was impressed with the little 1.6's performance, especially when above 4000rpm.
To be fair I didn't find the GTi quite as quick as the Clio to begin with. However, since having a full Peugeot Sport exhaust system, ram-air system, lightened & balance crank/flywheel and sports clutch, I can safely say that Peugeot's little pocket rocket can out-run all varieties of hot hatches and certainly puts a big smile on your face.
It would certainly leave my Clio 16v standing!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Although I've seen other 106 owners say it, I simply can't believe a 106 could get past 115-120mph. They don't appear to be the most solid cars ever built and I dread to think what noises it was making at 135mph. I own a 1.6l 8v 306 and its fast, but I very much doubt it could get past 120mph despite being the sort of big brother of the 106. I haven't had a chance to floor it yet, but when I do Il be keen to see if it can get anywhere near your "135mph". Whats your BHP out of interest?
