1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6i 16v petrol

Summary:

Little pocket rocket

Faults:

Warped brake discs, got them replaced under the extended warranty I purchased.

General Comments:

Absolutely wicked car to drive and the acceleration is wild, grips to the road like it's glued, not so good in the wet though. You will have loads of fun driving a 106 GTi especially when a 306 DTurbo tries to race, and you just laugh as you're powering past.

Insurance is a big problem if you are a young driver though, I'm 22 with 2 years no claims and had one quote of nearly £3000. I'm now currently paying £800ish (Do loads of shopping around).

Not too bad on petrol either if driven carefully, but it gets boring after a while.

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A quick car... when it actually starts

Faults:

Rear window demister broken - replaced under warranty.

Whole car respray due to contaminated paint.

Broken engine mounts causing engine + gearbox to fall out (new gearbox casing + driveshafts).

Loose wishbones.

Decals needed replacing due to incorrect placing.

Transponder/immobiliser malfunctioned - car refused to start. All under warranty.

General Comments:

A real driver's car, so controllable when not at the dealership getting fixed! Much faster than stated. The more you push the car the more it gives back.

Summary:

Rear calliper replaced under warranty.

Forget the 206 GTi, this is the 205 GTi replacement. Superbly balanced chassis.

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Superb driving car which needs more attention to detail when being built

Faults:

New back brake discs, new alternator (sp?) which turned out to be a faulty earthing strap - 3 weeks to fix properly, new catalyst, then a new exhaust system, all done under warranty thank goodness.

Poor quality paint on the wheels.

General Comments:

This car is just so good to drive, brings a big grin to my face driving it I can tell you. Power steering on mine does make the difference.

It is just a pity Peugeot can't put them together properly, or their dealers sort out a problem properly.

These cars are great and with a bit of application on the quality front from Peugeot nobody, nobody would drive anything else.

The dealers on the whole leave an awful lot to be desired, expensive and unresponsive.

1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 16v petrol

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Acceleration is phenomenal and due to it being so small and the awesome handling it feels like you are going twice as quick. The aggressive and sporty looks are a far cry from the typical ' cute' 106 models. Jan 99 has seen a change in alloys to new 'daytona' style which are an insult to people's eyes.

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 injection petrol

Faults:

Immobiliser wouldn't let the car start on a couple of occasions, rectified by taking key out of ignition and trying again.

Hand brake cable came away from retainig clips causing it to rub on rear wheel. Dealer says it is a "characteristic".

In very wet conditions the car was only firing on 2 cylinders (having gone through a puddle).

And finally whilst overtaking the rev limiter cut in at 4000 revs. It cleared when I lifted off and then accelerated again

General Comments:

Despite all the problems I have had I wouldn't swap it for anything else . It goes and handles great with even the shortest of journeys bringing a huge smile to my face.

Like the page it's a good idea, if we all did one I wonder if Peugeot would take a look.

I have a problem with my 106 diesel, I think its the immobilizer as the engine turns over, but the only light on the dash is the air bag light.

What is the significance of the key being taken out, the only theory I can think you had was that the key makes a circuit some where along the line.

I've been told that the whole immobilizer can be bypassed, is this correct and if so could you please tell me how to do it.

Thanks in advance.

1998 Peugeot 106 Gti 1.6i petrol

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Having previously owned a Peugeot 205GTi and a 106XSi, and previously tested a number of VW Golf GTi's, I have to say, the 106 clean sweeps the lot under the carpet. It's ride and handling compares to nothing I have driven before. This along with a strong nimble engine and stunning looks, should put the latest Peugeot sporting hot hatch top of every car buyer's list.

Fabulous car.

I drive to work on a B road and enjoy every mile every day!

I've put Valbrem 941 rims on to make the car look and feel better.
