1998 Peugeot 106 AX Look 1.1i

Summary:

A nippy Super mini!

Faults:

Nothing too major. the gear box is a bit sticky when using First, Second and Reverse. This is apparently common. I had Lexus Lights put on and the was a job for experts, I wouldn't try and do it myself again. I am six foot two and find the car a bit small and uncomfortable at times. the Pug 106 is very nippy and has great handling, I would advise people to get the higher models with power steering etc. Steering is very heavy and the clutch is too. Do not underestimate this super mini, I LOVE my Car!!!

General Comments:

This car is a great car for first time buyers.

Excellent. go out and buy one now!

1998 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 16v

Summary:

Nice car, very fast

Faults:

The Oil Temp Gauge went, requiring a new switch which cost me £25.

One of the drive shafts needs replacing which will cost me £125.

The door handle mechanism has just broken too, shouldn't be much to replace though.

General Comments:

I bought the car despite it being an insurance write off 2 years ago. I had the car fully serviced and fitted some Red Dot brakes and pads and I'm very happy with it.

Although on paper it's supposed to be slower than a Saxo VTS (my last car) this feels about the same speed ie very quick!

2nd and 3rd gears are fantastic, you feel like you can overtake anything!

The car doesn't feel very solid though. There's definitely something not quite right with the clutch and/or gearbox, and the ride doesn't feel as solid as it should.

I'm very happy with it though, and it looks stunning. I'll just try and keep this one on the road though as I wrote off my VTS!

If the ride doesn't feel solid, I'd recommened new bushes or at least get them checked, as this can adversly affect the ride and handling, and is quite common on high mileage or hard driven examples.

1998 Peugeot 106 rallye 1.6

Summary:

Rare performance idol, better than a VTR

Faults:

New disks and pads all round within a week of purchase - car not driven for months previous.

Back box came off - replaced with stainless steel system - too loud!

Two off side drop links.

Two front bearings.

CV joint failing.

Gear crunch.

General Comments:

This car handles and drives like no other and the engine pulls aggressively throughout the rev range.

Slightly weaker acceleration than the gti and other more powerful cars gets frustrating at times, but the car revs so willing and can tackle any corner at any speed, it makes up for it.

My car is so loud though, long hauls can be very draining, and driving through town causes everyone to look either in disgust or to admire - I've seen more Nissan Skylines on the road than rallyes since I bought mine 18 months ago!

The ride is reassuringly firm - not for the girls and make up! And body roll is minimum.

No other car can offer this much fiz for so little cash, but build quality will not mach even ford. My car got broken into the other day by the door being bent open from the top and was quoted £800 for a new one from Richwoods at Goole! No chance.

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye

Summary:

The drive of your life!

Faults:

Absolutely nothing, believe it or not.

General Comments:

I have read much about the Rallye, and can honestly say it is every bit as good as you've heard.

The agility and turn in of the 106 is astonishing. The steering is so quick, the well known lift off oversteer is easily controlled, and you'll have a grin from ear to ear!

The engine too, 1.6 8v, is outstanding. I have driven the 106 GTi, and despite having 20 bhp more, it is not even close to the Rallye in-gear, due to the mass of torque available from around 3500 rpm.

Last, but not least, having owned 2 Peugeot's (205/306 GTi) before, and still coming back for more, I had learned to live with the dreadful electrics and general build quality. However, fingers crossed, this Rallye seems to have made it out of the factory as the designers intended.
