1999 Peugeot 106 Quiksilver 1.4 injection

Summary:

A simple, but head turning motor

Faults:

As soon as I'd bought the car I had to replace the gearbox.

The electric (windows for example) have been dodgy since I first bought the car.

General Comments:

Although I did have problems with the gearbox at first this was soon sorted and I found myself driving a very fast car.

I feel the outer shell of the car is spot on, the interior however does not live up to similar standards.

1999 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 16v

Summary:

Last real Gti

Faults:

The rear brake pads and disks needed replacing after only 8000 miles.

Offside drive shaft replaced at 15000 miles after inner rubber boot split.

Radiator replaced at 28000 miles (car is only 3 years and 7 months old).

Rattly interior.

Broken sunroof frame.

Misting of both rear lights.

General Comments:

The faults can be frustrating, but all is forgiven the moment I get in the car and drive it. Nearly 4 years down the line I have still not considered replacing it. Always feels quick even in standard form. Handles very well, but can be tricky at the limits. Extremely high grip limits unless really pushing it.

Seats, rattly trim and noise can be tiring on a long journey.

Do-it-yourself knowledge is very helpful as dealers aren't so.

1999 Peugeot 106 Zest 2 1.1i

Summary:

Never, ever again will I buy a Peugeot

Faults:

Broken into with great ease. This is the manufacturers fault as there is no door lock protection.

I drove through a puddle and the car would not start again. Peugeot dealers then proceeded to charge me £130 for "essential" EMU maintenance work.

The carburettor controller started to go after about 20000 miles. I was determined to find out the cause of the problem myself as I was adamant I was not going to pay Peugeot's overpriced service prices. After much investigation I found out that it is an ongoing problem with these cars which Peugeot has forgot to tell buyers (this came from a Peugeot employee).

Seals around windows were bad.

The sunroof leaked.

General Comments:

The car is nippy for a 1.1.

I did everything I could to try and love the car.

I would never buy from Peugeot again as their parts and service team and possibly some of the most unhelpful (unless you let them hook the car up to a machine first. Which costs you £85 +VAT before you even get to the problem) group of people I have ever dealt with.

The 106's have fuel injection, not carburettors as you stated!!!

I have Peugeot 106 1.1 1999, older type of engine, and it does have carburettor, but with electronic fuel injection (single point).

1999 Peugeot 106 Quicksilver 1.4i

Summary:

A real head turner

Faults:

No major problems so far.

Received extended years warranty.

General Comments:

This car is very quick for a 1.4.

I put a K & N injection kit on the car, and this has raised the performance from 7/10 to 8/10.

The car can easily stay with the 106 GTI up to about 85 mph, but then the GTI pulls away.

I understand that the Quiksilver is a nice, economical car, but can it really keep up with a GTI? All the go-faster goodies in the world could not make it that quick. I agree it does look the part, but as far as performace goes, it is, but a mere speck in a Rallye or GTI rear view mirror.

1999 Peugeot 106 G.T.I 1.6 16v

Summary:

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Faults:

Alarm was going off a lot, one visit to dealer sorted it out (under warranty).

Catalytic convertor broke after having the car for two months (again repaired under warranty).

General Comments:

The car looks great outside, but the interior seems a little dated, mainly the dashboard.

Will surprise drivers of other hot hatches, especially on any roads with twists and turns.

My GTI is easily mistaken for the lesser quicksilver, which can be humorous at the lights.

For the first couple of months of driving the car gave me a bad back, this is due to the pedals being slightly to the left of the steering wheel and seat. Seems O. K now though.
