2003 Peugeot 106 Independance 1.1i

Summary:

There are worse ways to get from A to B!

Faults:

Offside front shock mounting shot after around 15,000 miles. Replaced under warranty.

Offside front shock mounting shot again after around 35,000 miles, replaced under warranty again. No further problems with this part.

Ignition coil breaking down causing intermittent misfire at around 50,000 miles. Replaced under warranty (although car was still driveable).

Exhaust fell off at around 62,000 miles. Soon after the downpipe failed, so a full manifold-back exhaust system was fitted in the space of a month.

Exhaust manifold blowing slightly when I got rid of the car at around 72,000 miles.

General Comments:

Despite the problems listed above, the car never let me down. It was never rendered un-driveable (except with the exhaust, which is of course a wear and tear item) and as such, provided me with 72,000 miles of dependable motoring from new.

The car looks well and is very comfortable for its size. The seats do not encourage fatigue even on long journeys, however the car can be rather loud at motorway speeds.

The humble 1.1i 8-valve, 60bhp engine is very flexible when combined with the low kerb weight and well-designed gearbox ratios. It copes well on the motorway and although it is not a quick car the response is generally there when you need it. Only when overtaking on single-carriageway roads and when there are a number of adults in the car does it struggle.

Economy could be better. Typically 50-55mpg under a light foot on motorway runs, but nearer 40-45mpg around town.

Handling is excellent. The 106 is fun to drive, although the "standard" suspension package does result in a bit of body roll under enthusiastic cornering. Easy to get the care sideways when lifting off the throttle mid-bend. Could be doing with more grip however, a set of 15" alloys with 45/195 tyres could make a huge difference.

All-in-all a decent budget, no-frills car. The only major disappointment is Peugeot parts prices, they are not cheap! I even got a decent trade in figure for the car.

2003 Peugeot 106 S 1.4i 8v 75 BHP

Summary:

Good Car

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car was a hire car which we had for 8 days in Spain. It proved to be reliable which you would expect. The performance of the car was not bad as it could cruise at 130 KM/H with ease, but the engine did get a little noisy at those speeds. For some reason I did like the note the engine gave after 4,500 RPM and I did take it to the Red Line a few times, but not often. A little sluggish off the mark when loaded with 3 people and luggage.

It proved to be a good little car for the week and wouldn't hesitate to hire one again.

The seats were a little uncomfy as I had some back pains after sitting in the seats for more than an hour, but I could put up with it for 8 days.

The performance of the car is Quoted at 12.7 seconds to 62MPH and a max speed of around 107 MPH (172KM/H).

Overall a good car.
