1985 Peugeot 205 1.0 petrol

Faults:

The mileometer & speedometer (see above!)

Doors & windows very temperamental.

Slight rust around the windows.

General Comments:

I love this car. The National Car Test will take it off the road officially tomorrow (30/9/00).

You never have another first car. And never one that cost you nothing 3 years ago and (apart from petrol) only IRP 3.50 in repairs, yes, that's less than the cost of a pack of cigarettes.

1985 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Heater motor works intermittently.

Wheels need regular balancing.

Broken glovebox compartment.

All-new brakes, including calipers.

Radiator perished.

General Comments:

Watch out for rust where the sill joins the back panel, under the seats and on the rear quarters.

Trim quality is okay, but fasteners and clips are easily broken.

Great revvy engine, seriously good handling.

Buy one, thrash it, sell it for what you paid, and get another one!

Buy one, thrash it, then get another one? Well that's the reason good ones are so hard to find these days. And when you DO find one that some idiot ain't rinsed out it might set you back up to £3k. Of course if people looked after them in the first place...

1985 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Engine rebuild at 150,000, alternator at 170,000, starter at 175,000, throttle stop switch at 175,000, all brake pipes (inc flexibles), clutch at 145,000, watch out for bonnet safety catches as they are weak and bonnet can fly open at speed (as it did on mine)! Heater fan motor at 170,000, watch out for rust on rear quarters!

General Comments:

This car was a lot of fun! It's very fast in a straight line and on corners and the seats and driving position are excellent. The main problem is build quality and the prices of parts and servicing. If you can put up with that and are willing to look after it you have got a great car capable of BIG mileages! Enjoy!

Parts are cheap, not expensive and the engines are French so they will need rebuilding every 100K!! Get the Haynes manual and do it yourself it makes sense!

I have a Peugeot 205 GR from 1985 which I bought in 1994, and I still have it. The clue is simply to be willing to look after it, that's my experience, and I see that other owners of a 205 say more or less the same. Since I bought it I have not had any problems with either engine, gearbox, clutch or other really vital things. The garage bills have more been for change of worn out parts, a few reparings of rust injures etc. What has been of rust has mainly been of superficial character. Here in Norway we drive on the right side of the roads, and what has been of rust has therefore almost entirely been on the left side of the car (the drivers side). My car has now gone approximately 180000 km, and if I want it myself I think I can continue to have it for years and years.
