1996 Peugeot 206 Dturbo 1.9 turbo diesel
Summary:
Fantastic car, badly built
Faults:
Appalling cabin build quality - much of the trim fell off or stopped working (example: the air vent flaps which direct the flow of the heater air all fell apart, one by one, and the bits were left inside the vents impeding the air flow).
Heater never worked for long after it was fixed each time (fault was blocked tubes).
Many electrical faults (too many to mention...)
Mechanically: stuck thermostat, failed alternator, frequently failing glowplugs and finally cracked cylinder head at 103K.
General Comments:
First: this car has been generally awful on paper BUT... what fun to drive! This combination of engine and gearbox is a minor work of genius. The turbo boost is worked perfectly with the gear ratios to produce amazing performance for 92 bhp. I loved driving it. It always put a smile on my face on the open road (comparison: my other car is a 260 bhp Legacy, which is very mad and exciting, but isn't lighthearted FUN like the 306 was).
I only had this car for seven months before it died, and that time was full of problems, but I had great fun with this car. If I could find a lower mileage example (hopefully more reliable) I'd love to own another one.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
