1994 Peugeot 306 S16 2.0 16V

Faults:

Radiator damaged, cooling system pipes corroded, front brake discs warped, exhaust needed replacing, blows out dipstick on very high revs, spark plug fouled by oil, suspect cylinder head need regrinding though car is running OK at present.

General Comments:

A lot of fun to drive. Plenty of grip and plenty of feel through the steering. No body roll at all. Very quick indeed, esp above 4000rpm. Fuel economy poor (26 mpg). Dealers charge the earth for servicing. Hasn't been 100% reliable. Not the best built car but has a nice interior. Great stereo.

I owned an s16 and found the fuel economy appalling. I now own an imported WRX and its exactly the same on fuel and has 140bhp more!

I did enjoy the s16, it seemed great to drive at the time. But not sure what the fuss is about, they are a tad boring now.

1994 Peugeot 306 XT 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Failed oxygen sensor (3 times).

Alarm key fob broken.

Battery tray cracked.

Flat battery.

Loose suspension top mount.

Coolant leak from thermostat housing.

Total engine rebuild at 22,000 miles.

General Comments:

If the car functioned as it was designed to do, it would be lovely, the ride and handling are excellent. However the car has been nothing but trouble since it was purchased, with a whole catalog of failures, and no help or interest from the Peugeot dealer from where it was brought. Legal action was threatened and trading standards were involved when the engine failed at 22,000 miles, a total engine rebuild was given by Peugeot, eventually. A nice car, shame about the unhelpful dealer and poor build quality.

1994 Peugeot 306 XR 5-door 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Water leakages from door sealings. First from the back door and a month later from the front door. A lot of rain water came in and caused a lot of harm. Problems with the engine electronics software. The control unit Eprom IC was changed and this helped.

General Comments:

A good car to drive in it's class. Nice design. Too many faults - perhaps the later models are better!
