1996 Peugeot 306 XSi 8V 2.0

Summary:

GTI-6 isn't fast. the 8v is a good car

Faults:

Within 25 miles of picking the car up, the oil pump packed up and the car needed a rebuild at a cost of £700 (great).

Since then, the car has been hammered (can't help it) and it has never once given up! ultra reliable, a companion!

Radiator got shot at by an air rifle (found pellet in rad) so that needed replacing.

General Comments:

Handling is superb, don't think the car was lowered, had standard 15" XSI alloys and it out handles almost anything. 8v motor torquey and reliable, seats comfy, looks good, not over the top. GTI-6 performance is a myth, yeah, its quick, but the gearing lets it down, I was glued to one in a 420GSI rover estate on the straight. the XSI isn't hyped up like the GTI, so its allowed to be a little sloweR!

1996 Peugeot 306 DTS 1.9 DTurbo

Summary:

Excellent performance for the running cost, but poor reliability

Faults:

Injector pipes 4 times.

Both bottom ball joints worn to excess by previous owner. Resulted in hubs being worn and needed replacing.

Engine generally in poor condition, but that's due to previous owner (s). Oil came out like creosote when did and oil change.

General Comments:

Good car, but poor reliability (not all down to Peugeot).

Not had any electrical faults (yet - touch wood)

The car handles very well, the back end has been lowered and the car has Toyo T1-S Proxes tyres on... very good!

Seats are OK, but could be better, more padding and lumbar support needed.

1996 Peugeot 306 XLDT 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Cheap and fun to drive

Faults:

I have had to replace a drive shaft as the intermediate bearing failed. I did this myself and the drive shaft cost £70. Other than that it has needed normal service items only (Battery/Tires)

General Comments:

I am amazed how much I like my 306. It was purchased as a cheap car to run. It has lived up to this as I have had little cost and by trying (hard!) I can approach fuel consumption of 60mpg. With the 60 liter tank that gives a big range.

On top of that it's a bit of a cracker to drive. It likes cornering and is still comfortable on long runs.

The XL only has an electric sunroof, no other extras which means there is less to go wrong.

1996 Peugeot 306 xrdt turbo diesel

Summary:

A quickish, economical drive, overall 4/5

Faults:

Power steering pump has gone

Flipping bulbs need replacing all the time

Water in Oil Filter light comes on now and again for some unknown reason.

General Comments:

I have had this car for 5 years now and I have to say it has been a reliable car all of that time.

It failed to start once or twice, once due to glow plugs and then due to an old battery.

Otherwise comfortable seats with good back support.

Quick around the midrange.

Very good economy, I get 600+ miles to a tank.

Dash is a bit boring.

Service intervals make it a bit costly 6000 miles.

1996 Peugeot 306 XR 1.6 Injection

Summary:

Very pleased overall, still exciting to drive with excellent reliability

Faults:

Electric Window passenger side needed to be replaced.

Uneven idling fault, this was fixed by fiddling with the control box that connects to the carburetor.

Petrol Tank sender unit failed and had to be replaced.

General Comments:

Handling and comfort are excellent.

Seems quite heavy on fuel when driving around town.

Very reliable.

1996 Peugeot 306 s16 2.0 16v

Summary:

Beautiful beast

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with it so far.. but when I start her up, wait for ten seconds then rev it, sometimes she dies out then I have to start her again. Nothing serious though. Theres also a little noise in the engine when it hits 3200revs, haven't worked out what it is yet.

General Comments:

It's a beautiful car, especially in sigma blue. It handles OK, I've lost the back-end a few times although I was going over 100mph around the corners! top speed is 145mph, which I had along a long long road in wales, altough I've fitted a k&n induction kit, a resistor chip and a Peco 4"exhaust. 180bhp isn't bad!
