1992 Peugeot 309 GL 1.6

Summary:

A comfortable, cheap, general purpose car

Faults:

Car had an electrical fault soon after I acquired it, indicators and windscreen wipers would suddenly not work.

Ignition amp needed replacing.

General Comments:

I find this car very comfortable and I enjoy driving it, despite being only a GL model the seats and steering wheel feel really good and it doesn't look bad either.

Car has plenty of boot space and lots of room if you put the rear seats down.

Performance is good with good cornering and braking.

1992 Peugeot 309 GTi 1.9 petrol

Summary:

Excellent performance car

Faults:

Huge oil leak & general oil consumption.

Squeaks, rattles, & knocks.

Blows off CV boots after 6,000 miles.

Tempramental electrics.

Suspension bush.

Air flow meter.

Fuel pressure regulator.

Hates traffic jams - unrelated to reliability.

Car attracts a lot of attention from thieves.

General Comments:

Fantastic performance, has beaten many alleged 'better' and newer sports cars, handling unbelievable.

Unfortunately running costs are also unbelievable.

Excellent if used as a second car.

1992 Peugeot 309 GTi 1.9 petrol

Faults:

Oil leak, overheating, front suspension bush. Front fog light wires corroded.

General Comments:

Quite quick, great handling.

Can be tiresome on the motorway as at 70mph in 5th the car is doing 3500rpm. Tyres are very expensive due to low profile and high speed rating. Needs ABS.

Fuel consumption is bad in urban cycle and the car is not good in traffic jams. Fun but not especially practical.

1992 Peugeot 309 GL 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Bought car at 47,000 miles and two years old; I've done 75,000 miles in 3 years.

Rev Counter has a funny every so often (3 - 4 times in 3 years) where it stops working, then operates with low readings etc, and finally a day or two later is back to normal - I suspect muck on the sensor (?) - but it's not life threatening is it.

Dashboard lights gone - behind heater etc - and nigh on impossible to fix.

Bonnet and Boot lights gone - boot one fiddly to keep in place.

Got that tiny spot of rust at seal between wheelarch and inside of rear door.

Leak on fuel line within carb unit - the Vauxhall man was a little unhelpful given that the car uses two sizes of such rubber hosing - maybe he was also having a bad day.

Sometimes can be funny about going into reverse from a cold start.

Stereo (Grundig - as supplied) occasionally turns itself off - maybe due to dirty contacts

Frozen fuel in carb jets - That cover supplying warmed air to the carb above the exhaust manifold is vital on a cold very windy day (on the M42) - mine had broken one of the mounts and so was removed - later replaced.

General Comments:

Given the 75,000 miles I've done I think the car is sound, reliable and has been cheap to maintain. The car's done 125,000 miles (or thereabouts) and I've no plans to replace it until I have a major failure (like the engine expiring) - and even then a replacement recon engine plus fitting can be cheap in comparison to a new car - if you've had your moneys worth from the car.

The 1600 is ok even at 100, but more power could always be useful.

1992 Peugeot 309 GL 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Brakes pads - repeatedly.

Clutch.

Front suspension.

Exhaust, tyres, etc

Electrics: doors lock/unlock at random, clock light, speakers random.

General Comments:

Generally reliable, reaching the age where cars tend to play up I guess. The electrics are a major pain - and have cost +£100 without any success so far.
