1990 Peugeot 405 GL 1.9 diesel

Summary:

A cheap 'n' cheerful form of mobility

Faults:

Central Locking had fault which meant the car would unlock its self.

Noisy Diesel engine bad at speed

Chronic oil leak

Water pump replaced at 78,000

Timing belt tensioner pulley badly worn and replaced at 78,000.

General Comments:

Typical cheap, tatty Peugeot workman ship, a slight improvement on the smaller vehicles in the Peugeot range i. e the 205.

Good fuel economy... but it was a Diesel!

Good size car, mine was the estate model, plenty of room for all passengers, loads of boot space.

1990 Peugeot 405 SRi 1.9

Summary:

Needs tender loving care

Faults:

Heater hose burst shortly after buying the car.

The alternator was replaced.

Brake switch underneath the brake pedal failed - easily replaced for under £5.

Rear brake pads replaced - watch out for sticking calipers on the rear brakes.

Drinks oil - 1-2 litres every 2 weeks - valve stem oil seals?

Radiator requires topping up every week.

May be losing water from the heater matrix?

General Comments:

This car requires regular attention to keep it in good running order.

A responsive car - lovely to drive - great handling and fantastic brakes.

Body work has no rust, but now looking shabby.

The coolant leak, if not in the engine, will definitely be the heater matrix. Check if the carpet in the passenger footwell is wet/sticky. Check the O-Ring seals on the two pipes going into the matrix.

This car has been less than reliable. Goes OK for a few weeks, then something else goes wrong. Which of course means spending more money.

Thirsty; 11.3L/100km. I do believe there is *something* wrong with it however.

The interior is cheap and tacky.

Very comfortable compared to Japanese cars I have driven. Great on long journeys.

Suspension and handling good.

Looked good in its time.

Has resisted rust pretty well.

1990 Peugeot 405 GL 1.9 8v petrol

Faults:

Oil leak from O ring seal around distributor.

Faulty heater blower fan.

Boot leaks water which is a pain because I transport a lot of computer equipment.

Nothing too serious though.

General Comments:

When I bought the car from a local dealer (Parkhills garage, Bury), it was supposed to be a 1.9 8V petrol. Low performance got me suspicious about the CC of the engine and on closer inspection the engine had been replaced with a 1.6 8v petrol without informing the DVLC (naughty). I have since taken the car back to the garage and had the engine exchanged for a 1.9 8v petrol. The car has a lot more performance now (I've reached 130 mph on a stretch of motorway at 2 o'clock one morning, scary stuff). Performance seems a little slower now than when I had the engine changed 8 months ago but I think it just needs a tune up and service.

Reasonable spec central locking, electric sunroof although not windows, no power steering but it's quite light none the less. Good performance and cheaper to insure than similar spec cars eg. Cavaliers and Sierras.

1990 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9 16v petrol

Faults:

Brake sensors failing, ABS pump switch not working on warm days (?), sunroof cables snapping, central locking plays up.

General Comments:

My car has covered 160,000 miles without a hint of engine or gearbox troubles. It's only let down by silly little things as mentioned above. a very sturdy car.
