1992 Peugeot 405 GL 1.6 carb

Summary:

Big car equals big fun (surprisingly)!

Faults:

Water hose went unexpectedly, but not expensive to fix.

Cambelt cost £200 (!) to renew!

Auto-choke stuck and cost £55 to clean out.

Brakes will need doing for its M.O.T (discs and pads).

General Comments:

Very nice to drive, and extremely comfortable.

Find a reputable independent garage for servicing and repairs - main dealers are expensive.

1992 Peugeot 405 GRD 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Roomy, practical family transport

Faults:

Leaking heater matrix - twice!

Oil in the fuel warning sensor.

General Comments:

Good performance for a diesel, with reasonable economy.

Paintwork and trim still looks good at eight years old, despite a bare minimum of cleaning!

1992 Peugeot 405 GLD 1.8 turbo diesel

Summary:

Cheap and (almost) cheerful

Faults:

Fuel injection pump fell apart.

Leaking injector.

Rear washer failed.

Wash wipers intermittently stop working.

Lazy electric window on the passenger side.

Various electrical gremlins.

General Comments:

The car is now mechanically reliable and with regular oil changes I would expect it to do another 100,000 miles.

The rest of the car is a catalogue of disaster with various bits of trim falling off and electrics that seem to have a mind of their own.

However, when it is running right it is smooth and quiet and costs next to nothing to run.

1992 Peugeot 405 GTDT 1.7 turbo diesel

Summary:

Never again!

Faults:

Constantly lost water (blown gasket?).

Throttle cable needed replacing (35 uk pounds DIY).

Rear axle needed major overhaul (warranty).

Heater motor packed in (loose connection).

Air con never worked despite spending over 300 uk pounds at dealers.

General Comments:

The above does not include about 150 uk pounds spent on replacing cam belt (service item at dealers) - so I figure I spent more on this car in maintenance than ALL my other cars put together to date (no joke). It was a financial black hole!

The interior was small for its size. The ride on was very harsh - unbearable on rough roads. The performance was very good when the turbo kicked in (kicked is the word!).

DIY was a nightmare - even an oil change was hard work.

I only kept the car 6 months, it HAD to go!

We just acquired a 1992 405 GTD Turbo and the ride is comfortable, it is spacious and if serviced regularly, it should be OK for 200,000 miles.

I agree with the last statement... the car is comfortable, spacious and will last a long time.

I have had 5 Peugeot's and all have been reliable. Fuel consumption on my 1992 1800 405 TD estate is excellent with between 60-70 miles per gallon if taken steady and over 45 miles to the gallon if hammered. This car as now completed 154,000 miles with just a few minor problems through out it's life. A clutch replacement was done at 134,000 mile this was still the original and good for another 20,000 miles if the thrust bearing hadn't seized - try and get a Ford to do that!! Rear brake linings are still original and going strong. I don't think that you could ask more from a car than this.

1992 Peugeot 405 GTD Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Fierce cheap car to put on the road

Faults:

Sunroof cables seized.

All electric windows seized.

Head gasket went.

Head warped.

Brakes failed.

Very bad lights.

Boot leaks water.

Back lights dodgy.

Back axle totally failed.

Rocky seat.

This was when I bought it.

So I bought a crashed 93 405 GRDT.

Put on back axle, engine, gearbox, wiring, interior, spotlights and lots of other bits.

General Comments:

Fine car now, would handle any turn. Great car to accelerate and it's a plesure to drive. And I have lots of spares.

1992 Peugeot 405 GRD 1.9 diesel

Faults:

Sometimes stalls after a cold start. No other problems (only 66500 miles on clock).

General Comments:

Badly lacks driver leg-room, very good spec wise. 50-55 M.P.G easily on the motorway. I am going to sell the car due to leg cramps / back ache, not the cars fault, its just I'm too tall for the cabin.
