1995 Peugeot 405 GLX 1.6

Summary:

A small yellow sour tasting fruit, often sliced and served with Martini

Faults:

The front fog lights have never worked and are too expensive to replace.

Three new tyres. The wheel brace bent the first time I had to use it

The exhaust front pipe blew and as this is connected to the Catalytic converter I had to have a new one of those too. £200.

The relay to the fuel pump has been replaced.

The key fob alarm control is temperamental. Sometimes it works from a few feet away, sometimes only when the key is touching the sensor. I have actually driven it with the headlights flashing ambulance like for a distance of 5 miles before I was able to turn the alarm off.

The alarm is not connected to the horn resulting in a 'silent alarm' situation, allowing it to be driven away as described above!

Not sure that the air conditioning is working as it should.

The wing mirror has been replaced.

The wiper arms both need replacing.

All this in 4 months of ownership.

General Comments:

When it goes, it goes well, but its just too temperamental.

Its comfortable, well equipped, quick and very roomy.

I have discovered that the likelihood of breakdown is directly proportional to the amount of toys one has to play with.

There is nowhere to store cassettes.

I have now parted company from this appalling piece of rubbish and not a moment too soon. Since the last update:

Linkages fell out of the gearbox again.

New alternator.

New key fob (£50) because the locks were about to fall apart (£200 for a new set)

My advice Stay away, don't even think about it.

Electrics are starting to go faulty in mine now, sometimes the intermittent wiper works sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the central locking works on all doors sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the fuel gauge works sometimes...

It's a nice car, it's a shame to see this happening, but it has done 97000 so what do you expect?

Also motor has gone in electric window, this is probably due to me smoking too much though!

Poor man.

Your car is a disaster.

I have a 1988 405 Gri and during my first year it hasn´t failed at all. I have my own review in the 1988 list.

I think you were very unlucky when you bought that car.

Where did you buy it?

My knowledge of the model is that the 405 is very solid concerning the engine and other major parts.

The weakness tends to be electrical gadgets (as all french cars up to year 2000).

Come visit me in Sweden and I will give you my 405 for free so you can enjoy a nice ride without havocs.

Good luck with your next car.

1995 Peugeot 405 GLX 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

The GLX TD was a fast reliable work horse

Faults:

Handbrake cables to the rear wheels - outer case split (replaced twice at 85k & 128k).

Oil filler pipe split at 128k.

Rocker box oil leak, progressive from 90k.

General Comments:

I owned my GLX TD for three and a half years doing 52,000 miles, a total of 130,800 miles.

While the fuel economy was excellent, 50 MPG at 80+ MPH, the cost of main dealer servicing was expensive especially as a service was required every 6,000 miles.

There were no major mechanical failures, wear & tear failures were non-existent due to regular servicing.

Body work was excellent with no rust, the only body fault being worn hinge pins on the driver's door.

1995 Peugeot 405 GTX 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Not worth 20k new. Otherwise the dogs nuts

Faults:

Intermittent bulbs fail (Peugeot trait - to keep you on your toes).

Suspension noises no-one else can detect (located as outriggers - common fault).

Appaling dealer servicing - Cliffords.

Auto box - heavy and wears the inside front tyres.

Rear tyre security bolts seized - replaced and kept greased.

Possible head gasket oil leak (possibly done by the dealer to cough up more money?)

Intermittent starting problems - probably the battery although the dealer wants the customer to buy a £250 piece of plastic.

General Comments:

The auto box and cruise control are ace for the speed cameras, set and cruise at 40mph etc... annoys other drivers though.

I have a 1992 Peugeot 405 1.9 GTX model. I've been having problems when I put it in drive, it revs high and doesn't go anywhere, but when I put it into 1st it drives up the box, but won't go in 1st. Do you have any idea what that is?

If so e-mail me at darrenkhl18@yahoo.com, it will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Darren..

1995 Peugeot 405 GTX 2.0i

Summary:

A niggly car with lower than average running costs

Faults:

Battery died after 4 years.

Tyre wear on the front is high and uneven.

Automatic gearbox recently started making a loud popping noise when changing from 2nd to 3rd!

Suspension clatter is ever present and 'a feature of the model'.

Vacuum hoses on the sensors crack causing leaks which make the car stall intermittently.

Indicators start up all by themselves - very annoying.

General Comments:

The seats are narrow and short and become very uncomfortable after more than an hour or so.

1995 Peugeot 405 GTX 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Economical car with driver appeal

Faults:

Drivers seat anchor point has come away from the chassis. Probably due to the height adjustment not working properly.

Emergency seat belt retainer on drivers side exploded into action with no apparent reason. The repair bill will be £340.

Clock is very dim, and virtually unreadable in broad daylight.

Air conditioning slows the car down a little!

General Comments:

Superb performer on the motorway, especially when cruising and accelerating between 50 and 70mph.

It returns 45 mpg to 55 mpg depending on usage.

Heater becomes useful very quickly on a cold winters morning.

1995 Peugeot 405 GTX 2.0 petrol auto

Faults:

Headlamp relay blew; air con failed (twice); temp gauge failed.

General Comments:

Despite a few niggling secondary problems the car has proved reliable where it matters and a delight to drive.

Auto box pretty good but can be a bit slow on kick down.

1995 Peugeot 405 GLX TD Estate 1.9 turbo diesel

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This is a wonderful car. Very reliable and very good value for money. The GLX range all come with Air-Con as standard and is an absolute must for those hot days, also great for clearing the mist from the screen. Having previously owned the non-turbo version I would not go back, without it the car is annoyingly slow and has to be driven hard. Looking for an estate then you cannot go far wrong with the Peugeot 405.
