1996 Peugeot 406 GLX 2.1 turbo diesel

Summary:

I am very impressed so far

Faults:

Having had the car for only 3 months the only things I have found wrong with the car is the outside temp sensor doesn't work.

The rear disc pads need changed.

General Comments:

The car is very confortable to ride in seats ect.

It is very stable on the motorways.

The 2.1 turbo diesel runs very well for such a heavy car. Mileage isn't that great it gets around 40 mph on average.

Very nice looking car for the age.

Everything works as it was from new.

Lets be honest, the Peugeot 406 is dated and dull. 99.9% of Peugeot product are unreliable, and adding big engines and leather seats doesn`t make any difference. Other cars in this class are better looking and cheaper to purchase and run. Companies like Fiat and Seat are offering cars at realistic prices and are a much better buy offering similar, if not better, levels of equipment. C'mon Peugeot, sort yourselves out, you are playing catch up already; after all it`s 2007. By the way when are Peugeot going to finish off the front end of the 407! Looks like it's got a big black hole in it! Did they run out of plastic? There's enough on the inside to borrow!

Had a Vectra diesel.. absolute crap! Had a Mondeo with the pathetic 1.8 td unit, again! Even had a BMW 325 TDS nice car, but nothing but problems with it, and the 406 beats them all hands down for comfort and reliability, and to be honest even looks! But not sure about the 407.

1996 Peugeot 406 LX 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Fun handling family sedan

Faults:

Tyres needed replacing at 41,000 miles, 58,000 miles and finally at 77,000 miles.

Clutch wore badly and needed replacing at 47,000 miles and again at 79,000 miles.

Driver's side electric window jammed at 54,000 miles.

Gear selector cable broke at 61,000 miles.

Interior trim was very flimsy.

General Comments:

Didn't withstand the test of time as well as some of my previous cars did.

But was still reasonably reliable, even if its build quality was lacking.

Handling was excellent, but performance was only average.

Inexpensive at £7,000 for a three year old family saloon.

Went for £3,000 at resale three years later.

1996 Peugeot 406 LX 2.0 16v

Summary:

Top notch motoring with a comfy family car

Faults:

The Petrol gauge can sometimes have a mid of its own. However, if I tap it it will show the correct level again. I find this happens most often when I have the heating or lights on, as it gets pretty hot behind the dashboard.

One of the timer belt wheels groans in wet weather. I've tried to oil it, but its tight quarters and difficult to get at.

Catalytic converter gave up (original one from manufacture of car) at 156k miles.. I think I hit it off of a speed bump when my car was fully loaded though.

Front door sill seal rubber on both sides have half detached from their mounts. Can be raked off with a foot upon exiting the car. Closing the door re seats them however... no leaks or such.

General Comments:

At 158k miles I really cannot complain. I do a 50mile round trip commute every weekday and can sometimes clock up to 200 miles at the weekend, so she's a bit of a workhorse.

I took the car to the continent and drove for 8 hours at an average of 90 mph non stop. I used 3 quarters of a full tank of petrol and had no problems... all with 140k on the clock at the time. I then did the same coming home... but then the car was loaded to bursting with luggage and 1 passenger. Only used marginally more petrol, but I got home from deepest Germany to Scotland on one tank of fuel. Now tell me that's not excellent fuel economy!

I must also add, I had a minor bump in heavy traffic that was deformed the bonnet slightly (pushed the front valance back by an inch or so)... that was 2 years ago.. it's still dented but it's not affecting the car one bit. Okay, it's tricky closing the bonnet when I've had it open.. but once closed its solid.

Coil Pack was replaced a week ago, I could swear there is more power from the engine now. I'm reaching 80 on the motorways a lot quicker.

I love this car. As soon as I have the ability to get a new one... its going to be another 406!
