1997 Peugeot 406 GLX 2.1 turbo diesel
Summary:
A very good all round tourer and family car
Faults:
Damaged drivers door due to a manufacturing fault.
Numerous articles of trim have been replaced.
Drivers electric window sticks.
Gearbox failed at 45000 miles (synchro hubs worn on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th).
CD autochanger constantly sticks.
General Comments:
Based on the handling and performance for a diesel, this is a superb car to drive.
It is not particularly quick off the mark, but the mid range torque at low revs combined with a quiet and smooth engine make it very satisfying.
However, it is badly let down by its build quality and the local main dealer network does not impress at all.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

My 2.1 TDLX has those exact same faults (although I didn't realise what had caused the damage to the door) plus a recurring airbag warning light fault.
However after owning a few Peugeots, I must say that the 406 drives more like a Mercedes than the other Peugeots!
