1998 Peugeot 406 Coupe 3.0 V6

Summary:

Good cheap (in Britain anyhow) coupe

Faults:

Thermo Fans switch on and off at strange times (like when starting from cold in the morning!)

Speedo works intermittently

Seat Adjusters on drivers seat snapped off

Electric entry handle to rear seats on Passenger side doesn't work

Electrostatic rear view mirror has frosted over.

Rain sensing wipers don't sense.

General Comments:

Overall, despite the little niggles, I like this car. I suspect it's had a hard life before me, but it's still doing the business no problem. Its comfortable, swift and well equipped. The fuel consumption is a little heavy, the PAG V6 being reliable, but certainly not efficient. Around town my girlfriend's Alfa 145 is much nicer drive, but on the highways the Pug shines. If you get one, make sure it's been looked after.

1998 Peugeot 406 L TD Estate 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Everything I'd expect from a Peugeot, but not more

Faults:

Exhaust tail pipe dropped off the final box costing about £70 to replace.

Drivers window lift mechanism occasionally develops a mind of it's own.

A rubber grommet under the rear seats above the fuel tank split, allowing water to splash up into the car (but not back out again) resulting in some rust developing around the seat peg. Used mastic and a new grommet to seal the hole after dealing with the rust.

Fuel gauge often lies to me and tells me I have more fuel than I did the last time I used the car. It usually settles down toward the lower half of the tank.

Glow plugs are an absolute pain to replace. Discovered three different makes out of four glow plugs upon removal, suggesting that previous attempts had been aborted.

Handbrake a little slack. Have to go under the car to adjust it! Not right now, thanks.

General Comments:

Disappointed to see that the L model does not include a tachometer whereas my 306 xld did.

Although the wipers are nice and big, the curvature of the windscreen often means that the blade doesn't always touch the glass, resulting in smears.

I completely agree with your comment about the drivers side window having a mind of its own. Mine will go up half way then decide to go down again even though I am still pushing the switch up! I've had the switch off, cleaned it and covered it in WD40 with little effect. Just another wonder of Peugeot electrics I guess. Also, the rear wash wipe doesn't work but apart from that it's a really good 10 year old car. It starts and stops brilliantly!

1998 Peugeot 406 V6 Executive Estate 3.0 V6

Summary:

A stunner

General Comments:

Have only had the car a few weeks, but it drives like a dream.

Leather all round comfort, air conditioning and an attractive dash board layout complete with full electrics kit make it extremely pleasurable to drive.

The engine purrs and is extremely quick.

Brakes are positive.

Extra touches include interior door lights on all four doors, illuminated vanity mirror for passenger and driver, memory position on drivers seat which also adjusts mirror settings automatically. The list goes on. All in all an eye catcher and a serious car to drive.

1998 Peugeot 406 LX 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

A reliable engine, but far too many niggling electrical faults

Faults:

Several headlight and brake light bulbs have blown.

The radio cassette on/off button broke off.

The stalk on the steering column controlling remotely the operation of the radio cassette player started increasing the volume by itself.

The electric front window operation became erratic.

The water pump had to be replaced when it started to leak.

The radiator had to be replaced when a leak was found.

The central locking failed until I found a way to reprogram the key.

At about 95000 miles a rumbling noise from the rear suspension could be heard every time the car went over a bump or was traveling over an uneven road surface.

General Comments:

The car is economical and the seats are comfortable. It also has a cavernous boot.
