2003 Peugeot 406 Executive 2.0 HDi

Summary:

OK

Faults:

Beyond the consumables expected of age and miles, the car had minor electric issues but nothing too serious.

2.0 HDi was serviced earlier than recommended and only with quality oil and filters.

Some interior plastics broke.

General Comments:

Last of the 406's on a 2003 registration, this was a great car.

Fantastic to look at and drive.

2.0 HDi diesel was a joy, I never had any issues with it even after high mileage. I do not believe all this diesel nonsense about constant problems - just service them on time and give them a long drive (no car likes short journeys) and it will be fine. Diesels were simpler of this generation however.

Very comfortable interior.

It did a solid 46 - 50 mpg also.

The 406 was easily one of the best value for money cars I had. Wasn't too keen on later 407's.

2003 Peugeot 406 GLX estate 2.2HDI

Summary:

Underrated dark horse

Faults:

Very little went wrong.

Had a new starter motor at about 75,000.

Had to have the particulate filter serviced twice, very expensive at about £400 a time.

Never let me down.

General Comments:

Bought the car new in the Netherlands and imported to he UK as a personal import. Local dealer did warranty work with no fuss.

Really good car. Economical on fuel, 40+mpg. Good at pulling my caravan. Comfortable, discrete, quick & reliable.

Now bought a Volvo estate simply because after 6 years I fancied a change. Sold the Peugeot to a client so I have every confidence in it.

2003 Peugeot 406 S 2.0 HDI turbo diesel

Summary:

Comfortable, roomy, economical and cheap to maintain

Faults:

The rear electric window lockout switch has to be wiggled in order to get it to depress.

General Comments:

This car is everything I expected. Not too fast but very economical (can average 57 MPG at 55 MPH).

The road noise in the cabin is very low and the rest for my clutch foot is a god send on long drives.

2003 Peugeot 406 Executive 2.0 HDi

Summary:

Superb Car

Faults:

Nothing yet.

General Comments:

I was somewhat dubious regarding what the quality would be like, given some reviews I have read and my experience with Peugeot's in the past. I can say that I need not have worried. The build quality is very good and the car is generally very solidly screwed together.

The handling and comfort is sublime, the seats being supportive and the leather trim is superb. Every conceivable extra is fitted as standard including the excellent satellite navigation. The stereo (250 watts) is also very impressive.

The diesel engine is very refined, reliable and offers strong performance. I can accelerate up steep hills in fifth gear from 40 miles per hour. My v6 Omega with manual transmission needed fourth or even third gear to achieve this. I am also averaging about 51 miles per gallon on a 50 mile journey, half motorway, half A and B roads.

This is a company vehicle, and I had a choice of over 1500 vehicle models. It is still one of the most attractive designs, still probably has the best comfort/handling compromise (I have tried the Toyota Avensis. Good as it is, the Peugeot is more solid and more comfortable. Push your finger into the C pillar on an Avensis!). When I went to a dealer he had sold two 406's that week and like me, the buyers had narrowed their choice down to the Avensis and the 406. Funny that!

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable car to own and drive. Don't discount a vehicle just because it isn't a new design. Next to some new designs the 406 still looks far sleeker.
