2001 Peugeot 607 SE 2.2 HDI diesel

Summary:

A big mistake

Faults:

A new engine was fitted prior to my ownership.

A new drivers seat was fitted at 40,000 miles, cost £1200.00.

A new windscreen wiper motor was fitted soon after the seat.

All the tyre valves were replaced at a cost £80.00 each.

At 58,000 miles, with just one week of the warranty left the steering rack and pump had to be replaced, cost £1400.00.

The vehicle was off the road for 5 months after an accident 4 months of this were due to non-availability of two body panels.

All the above were done under warranty.

The following are outside warranty.

In the last 3 weeks the exhaust particulate filter needed replacing, cost £500.00 parts and labour.

Last, but not least the drivers electric window broke, new cable plus rectifier, diagnostics and fitting £380.00.

General Comments:

The 607 is a very stylish and comfortable vehicle.

The fuel economy on the diesel is good and the ride is excellent.

However this comes at a price...reliability, it does not have any.

I have been disappointed with my 18 month 607 experience and have no option to sell the car, at a huge loss, but I need reliability.

My previous Peugeot's, a 306 and a 307 were both low on grief and on running costs.

If most of the work had not been covered by the warranty I would have been bankrupt by now.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

2003 Peugeot 607 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A good looking, Executive car with lots of extras, let down by poor reliability

Faults:

The car is now coming up to one year old and has been off the road for over two of its twelve months.

It has had electrical problems and Peugeot have been unable to supply spare parts without unacceptable delays.

I waited eight weeks for a new battery cable.

When the cable was eventually received and the car returned, the starter motor failed and I was towed back to the dealer.

Various warning lights appear on the dashboard at regular intervals, and there is then major inconvenience in having to take the car to a dealer.

General Comments:

In terms of value for money, the car offers a great deal for a reasonable price.

It is a very comfortable car with lots of extras.

However all this does not make up for the lack of reliability, and it will go down in history as the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I am surprised you have had so many problems. I had teething problems with the catalytic converter waning light in the first six months and the automatic door opening was temperamental for a while, but the dealer was great and fixed the problems very quickly.

The "extras" that come with this car are excellent. I have the Ivoire model and have leather seats, 6 CD changer, electric sunroof and window shades, parking control, navigation system, DVD player, 10 speakers and all sort of computer alerts from low tyre pressure to empty cleaning fluid. This all cost me less than Euro 4000 on top of the standard price. Volkswagen want Euro 10,000 for the same or similar equipment on the Passat.

My previous two cars were an Audi A6 and a Volvo S80. A lot more expensive, but performance wise, just about the same. and less comfortable.

2001 Peugeot 607 SE 2.2 HDI

Summary:

A good motorway cruiser, but with reliability problems

Faults:

Many minor electrical faults.

Heater packed up, took 3 dealer visits to fix, was in for 1 week as the whole dashboard had to be removed to replace the main control box and fans etc.

Replacement engine fitted at 40,000 miles during it's first recall. Dealer broke an injector in the head, no replacement heads available so new engine had to be fitted. Took several weeks to complete the work.

Second replacement engine at 66,000 miles. Engine started sucking the oil from the sump into the intake, continued running after the key was removed and carried on until it eventually seized, but only after engulfing both carriageways of the M6 in smoke.

Performance is now very poor since the last replacement engine and fuel consumption has dropped by 12 mpg.

Boot lock fails to release 7 times out of 10.

Drivers seat has broken and now rocks 1" back and forth.

Drivers window failed in the fully open position, requiring an emergency repair.

Air conditioning has now failed.

Probably forgotten some of the more minor reliability niggles.

General Comments:

When it is running well it is a very comfortable motorway cruiser, with reasonable economy for a big car. It used to average 42mpg.

The equipment level is very good.

The key fob is too sensitive, it is very easy to open the boot unknowingly. I have found the boot wide open several times in my drive in the morning.

The wheels require special balancing equipment, not all tyre dealers have the equipment.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

I was considering buying a 53 607 executive, but after reading some of the comments and reviews on this site don't think I will bother. A mechanic once said to me that the french mechanics and electrics are a recipe for disaster and it sounds as if he was right.

I retire with a lump sum in 3 months time and am looking for a replacement car for my remapped 160 bhp 2003 MGZT. It will have to be reliable and have good power. I was thinking of the 607 with the big bhp diesel, but on reading these reviews I cannot justify the potential for huge expenditure out of warranty as experienced by several, so I have now scrubbed the 607 off my short list - such a pity as it's almost the perfect car, leaving only the Audi A6 or A8, or, heaven forbid, the ultra reliable Toyotas! I will be checking out reviews on these next!
