1982 Renault 18 TD 2.1 diesel

Summary:

A lot of car for the money

Faults:

Rust in the floor and sills.

The boot lid is at the moment quite hard to close - a rear end smash might have occurred sometime in the past.

The seats were badly worn, but I fitted seat covers over them for the time being as good second hand seats for this make of car seem quite scarce now.

There were some problems with the electrical earth connections.

General Comments:

The overall performance is nothing to get excited about, but after eight to ten seconds, it can reach a top speed of 100mph!

The handling is acceptable, but power steering is a must, especially when parking the car.

The seats are very comfortable (they feel very like armchairs) and the interior offers quite a lot of space, even for medium-sized people who have to sit in the back seat.

The boot is reasonably large, with 396 litres of luggage space. The only two bad points for the boot are that the loading sill is far too high and that half the normal size of the boot is taken up by the fuel tank, which is placed behind the back seat!

Like most old French cars, this car has some typically French quirks (remember, the following is in a right-hand drive car) - the ignition switch is located at the left side of the steering wheel, along with the wiper switch; there are two stalks at the right side of the steering wheel - the short one is for the direction indicators, and the long one is for the lights and the horn!

Operating the steering column controls (especially the light switch) takes a bit of getting used to. If you turn the end of the switch 90 degrees and move it down one position the dashboard lights and parking lights come on. Move it down once more and the dip beam lights come on, and when you move it down again the main beam lights come on.

I'll never sell this car as it has a lot of character as well as being cheap to run and easy to maintain.

1995 Renault 18 RT 1.8

Summary:

A luxurious affordable car with problems that need to be looked into to create a very nice car

Faults:

Warning lights failure resulted in low oil and engine failure on the motorway - needed a new engine as a result!

Key controlling the engine immobilizer failed to work. 1 week delivery from France for a new one, in the meantime my car is stranded.

Central locking system had problems and the boot sometimes doesn't lock along with front doors. Also it will sometimes lock and will not open from the outside.

Overall this car has served me well, but it has certainly put a hole in my pocket.

General Comments:

The car is very smooth and is at its best for motorway traveling, but exceeding 100mph took its toll on engine.

The car is a nice drive and has plenty of features that would keep a driver of a top of the range car happy.

Renault 18 of 1995 year? This is something wrong - or Renault 19 or year 1985.

No r18 it"s not made in the year 1995 cloncanu romania 0040722329112.

Technically it could be a 1995 registration of a 1994-built South American-manufactured R18, they were still made in Uruguay and Colombia until then.

How it then got to be a UK and Ireland review might make for an interesting story.

1984 Renault 18 TD 2.1 diesel

Summary:

A reliable and comfortable car for its age

Faults:

The drive shaft seized up about three years ago because the boot had split without me knowing about it. Also, I've had to replace the gearbox and some of the ignition system. Apart from these problems, the car has given me no bother.

1986 Renault 18 GTS Deauville 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Very good all round motor, esp. long distance

Faults:

New fuel system at 90,000 miles, new driveshafts at 100,000 miles, new alternator, new ignition/steering lock.

General Comments:

Extremely comfortable car, plenty of legroom, handling could be better at speed, good fuel consumption for engine size and age, out-accelerates many modern cars of its size!

1983 Renault 18 TS 1.6

Faults:

Broken driveshaft.

Burst radiator (original equipment).

Rear suspension springs sheared.

Dampers needed replacing.

General Comments:

Handles like a jelly on trolley wheels.

Comfy seats though, just like being in bed. Surprisingly powerful 1.6 unit now I have added a K&N air filter, skimmed the head, had the valves re-seated and de-coked. Also high power HT leads, a performance ignition coil have taken at least a second off my standing 0-60. Anyone after a Renault 18 turbo engine, modified to 1647 cc from 1565 cc, fully rebuilt contact me on 07803 393007.
