1992 Renault 21 GTS 1.7 petrol

Summary:

A haunting, bizarre journey into automotive madness

Faults:

The immobilizer armed itself for no particular reason on a friend's driveway and had to be repaired by a call-out mechanic.

Electric sunroof stopped working within 6 months of my buying it.

OEM Tape player refused to work despite surgery with hammer.

Seats did not wear well.

Engine would sometimes cut out when the clutch was applied.

Fan would often come on for several minutes after engine was switched off, leading to frequent flat battery embarrassments.

Passenger side electric window only worked intermittently.

Rear Central locking failed within a year of purchase.

Leaked water from unidentifiable area under bonnet.

Engine finally exploded after almost exactly 2 years of ownership (the very day I was meant to trade in for newer car)

General Comments:

Owning this car was a surreal experience indeed. Admittedly it was a reasonably high-mileage car at purchase, but the number of strange and inexplicable electrical quirks defied belief.

As I've listed above, before its final spectacular demise in March 1999, it was privy to more strange occurrences than the Marie Celeste.

On the plus side, it wasn't the slowest car I've driven and it got my entire band plus amps and drum kit in it without breaking too many laws (I hope).

As seems to be the fashion with French cars, it seemed to float a couple of inches above the road rather than actually on it; there was virtually no feedback from the road at all and the suspension was morbidly soft.

After two years of merciless caning and virtually no servicing, my poor French friend finally died in an explosion of steam and smoke in a morning school-run traffic jam. A call out mechanic came and stared at the tattered hoses under the bonnet and couldn't seem to figure out what on earth had happened.

I was due to part-exchange it at a garage that morning; needless to say I kept the appointment, got a friend to tow me to the dealer's car park and made a hasty retreat in a much newer and more Japanese replacement...

I too have had the pleasure of owning a renault 21, but I am not being sarcastic. I was given my '89 renault from my uncle for free as he was going to send it to the scrappy.

18 months later and 25,000 miles (220,000 total), no servicing and only one alternator change, it's still going strong. Got to agree about the electrics and the leaks though. Shame the French aren't as reliable as their cars :)

1992 Renault 21 Turbo Quadra 2L

Summary:

Gallic crap!

Faults:

Blown hoses

Speedometer stopped working

Tachometer stopped working

Fuel guage with a mind of its own

Phillips radio/cassette stopped working

Rust

Wheel bearings all round

Front and rear calipers replaced

Clutch slave cylinder failed

Major problems with 4WD system

General electrical problems

Various oil leaks

Engine management playing up

Blown bulbs/fuses

General Comments:

This is one of the last Renault Turbo's to be made, and it is a very fast good handling car when nothing is going wrong. Unfortunately 99% of the time something IS going wrong.

I bought this car with my heart not my head BIG mistake. The interior is awful, dark, plasticky, flimsy and cheap, it shakes and rattles and groans constantly.

I bought the car for its power and handling, but now I wish I had my SAAB back, in fact anything would be better than this.

Its constant problems are driving me nuts, I dread getting in the the thing because I know something else will play up.

Speed means nothing. Reliability is everything, I'm bored to death with its wearisome problems now and will never buy a French car again, I mean what do they make them out of... Gitanes and garlic puree?

Truly ghastly, avoid it like the plague.

Very informative review. I was going to buy a cheap one, glad I didn't now. Thanks.

Like it happens with others, some units tend to fail more than they should. I know 21 Turbo's with lots of miles and no major problems. Better luck next time ;-)

I had one of these, and a Renault 25 V6 Turbo; without doubt the worst, most unreliable cars I have ever owned. Never again would I go near a Renault.

A comfortable, fast, safe-handling car

Faults:

Central locking, electric roof, electric mirror, vibrating shield on exhaust, faulty oil pressure switch and faulty diff. lock switch.

1992 Renault 21 GTS 1.7 petrol

Faults:

Two sets of front pads in only 2k. The radiator blew up on 56k, and is still prone to over heating. Cooling fan sounds like a small plane taking off. Currently having all sorts of electrical problems, not uncommon for a big Renault. The electric windows are very slow, and rarely work. Exhaust replaced on 60k, but despite new back box, it still makes a horrible sound when pushed.

General Comments:

Very accommodating and comfortable car to drive. But under powered with only a 1.7 litre to usher it along.

Very comfortable and fast car. The gearbox is very precise to use, the power-steering too!
