1992 Renault 21 GTS 1.7 petrol
Summary:
A haunting, bizarre journey into automotive madness
Faults:
The immobilizer armed itself for no particular reason on a friend's driveway and had to be repaired by a call-out mechanic.
Electric sunroof stopped working within 6 months of my buying it.
OEM Tape player refused to work despite surgery with hammer.
Seats did not wear well.
Engine would sometimes cut out when the clutch was applied.
Fan would often come on for several minutes after engine was switched off, leading to frequent flat battery embarrassments.
Passenger side electric window only worked intermittently.
Rear Central locking failed within a year of purchase.
Leaked water from unidentifiable area under bonnet.
Engine finally exploded after almost exactly 2 years of ownership (the very day I was meant to trade in for newer car)
General Comments:
Owning this car was a surreal experience indeed. Admittedly it was a reasonably high-mileage car at purchase, but the number of strange and inexplicable electrical quirks defied belief.
As I've listed above, before its final spectacular demise in March 1999, it was privy to more strange occurrences than the Marie Celeste.
On the plus side, it wasn't the slowest car I've driven and it got my entire band plus amps and drum kit in it without breaking too many laws (I hope).
As seems to be the fashion with French cars, it seemed to float a couple of inches above the road rather than actually on it; there was virtually no feedback from the road at all and the suspension was morbidly soft.
After two years of merciless caning and virtually no servicing, my poor French friend finally died in an explosion of steam and smoke in a morning school-run traffic jam. A call out mechanic came and stared at the tattered hoses under the bonnet and couldn't seem to figure out what on earth had happened.
I was due to part-exchange it at a garage that morning; needless to say I kept the appointment, got a friend to tow me to the dealer's car park and made a hasty retreat in a much newer and more Japanese replacement...
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I too have had the pleasure of owning a renault 21, but I am not being sarcastic. I was given my '89 renault from my uncle for free as he was going to send it to the scrappy.
18 months later and 25,000 miles (220,000 total), no servicing and only one alternator change, it's still going strong. Got to agree about the electrics and the leaks though. Shame the French aren't as reliable as their cars :)
