Wicked cheap first car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong while I have had the car apart from the badly worn seats.

General Comments:

It could do with a 5th gear and a bit quicker acceleration.

Recovered seats with new covers.

Very economical £10 petrol delivers 100 miles.

The bees knees

Faults:

My 5 Turbo has been fault free in every respect since I bought it. The only slight problem I have is at high speed (100+MPH) the temperature gauge rises, it only does this at high speed, all it needs is a radiator flush and/or a copper core radiator.

General Comments:

This is my 3rd 5 Turbo and this one is an absolute minter, it looks almost brand new inside and out, and the engine is spotless (no smoke from the exhaust etc). The performance is great, but I'm used to it so I think some serious upgrades are in order.

They are reliable and quick!!

Faults:

Rebuilt carb.

New exhaust.

Top strut bearings.

Anti perc fan.

General Comments:

They are reliable if they are treated correctly.

You will find that they have all been screwed to death from an early age thus causing problems later on.

Treat the 5 Turbo right and it will last a long time.

Very true. People do not look after them and they rag them hence they get a bad name.

Summary:

A bargain first car

Faults:

Loose connection on the number plate bulb.

Replaced the tailgate due to rust.

Apart from that, general wear and tear.

General Comments:

Everyone who gets into the car remarks on how comfortable it is, and this is a comment also relayed by strangers!

Its fairly nippy for a 1.1, and the engine has given me no trouble for 10,000 miles.

Could have done with the head rests and a fourth gear, as well as a better heater. Vents in the middle would be nice.

It's a great first car, in terms of reliability, running costs and insurance premiums.

It is an easy car for simple modifications - mine has GT Turbo seats & steering wheel for example.

A mechanic friend of mine also mentioned that it was simple to work on for routine work.

When I bought it, the only real problem was the rusting tailgate. That was replaced and the rest of the car was fine.

I tend to thrash her a bit - 80mph down the bypass with four gears tends to guzzle the gas, and can't do her any good - but she's coped well.

Big boys go-kart

Faults:

Nearside wheel bearing.

Turbo hose split leading to terrible performance, easily fixed with a new pipe.

Front shock absorbers needed replacing.

Intermittent fault on the fuel pump - kept losing the live causing the car to cut out.

Carburettor cooling fan, intermittent fault.

General Comments:

A once sought after hot hatch which goes like stink, handles pretty well and still after 11 years will get a second look.

Problems are to be expected with any car, especially after 11 years.

Not too keen on the interior.

Summary:

An excellent first car

Faults:

Nothing except timing when converted to unleaded, and a loose connection on the number plate light.

General Comments:

The car is slow at accelerating, with a full load, but this should be expected with a 1.1 car. Even so it gives other 1.1's a run for their money. And with two or three passengers it is pretty nippy.

Unfortunately this is not a car to overtake in unless you are in a low gear or have a very long run up.

The car is very nippy around town and is fine for the motorway and can keep up at motorway speeds and beyond. Although speeds above 95 or 100 miles an hour would be pushing it a bit.

The plastic interior makes the ride a bit noisy and squeaky.

The demister is not very quick, and leaves a line down the middle of the windscreen for a long time.

It could do with a 5th gear.
