1995 Renault 5 Campus 1.4

Summary:

A road going go-kart

Faults:

Rust on front of bonnet.

Rust on both front wings.

Rust on sills.

Rust on boot.

Rust on drivers door.

General Comments:

Apart from all the rust, this is a pretty good car.

The engine is pretty solid, as it has done over 100,000 miles without too much trouble.

The 1.4 engine is quite responsive, and pulls this little car pretty well.

As it only weighs 700kgs, it handles quite well; it doesn't mind being chucked into the bends.

However as it's a Campus, it is very basic.

I also find spare parts hard to get hold of.

1995 Renault 5 Prima Campus 1.4

Summary:

Nippy skateboard, but don't waste your cash

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 72,000.

Rear windscreen heater broke.

Heaters stopped working properly.

Fan switch failed.

Required new distributor cap.

General Comments:

The car is very nippy as it has a 1.4 engine, but is very light.

The ride quality is diabolical and it feels like the car has no suspension at all! You feel every bump in the road.

Looks like my great grandads's car. Very dated.

It's a total rust bucket.

Head gasket blew completely at 72,000 which I think is pretty poor. Had car scrapped as uneconomical to repair. Both the golfs I had previously managed 100,000 before the gaskets went.

1995 Renault 5 Campus 1.4

Summary:

Dirt Cheap Diamond!

Faults:

Front Tyres.

Exhaust.

Brake Pads.

General Comments:

This was the only brand new car I ever owned to date and I loved it dearly.

The edge was slightly taken off it when it was late to arrive, (3 times) and for the two days prior to its arrival they gave me a brand new Laguna courtesy car. No competition!

Although as basic as they come it was a very comfortable car. Driving position was excellent and as with all Renaults, the size of the interior begs belief given the size of the car.

Performance was superb and driving around town a delight. Motor ways were fine in good weather, but wind would knock the light weight sideways if not careful.

Frustrated with Renault, as this was the only option available, but pull off one of the hundreds of blanking plates on the dash etc, and all the wiring is there for the missing accessories.

Also the dealer sucked. Not only was the car repeatedly late to arrive, after three years of ownership, the first MOT was horrendous. More faults than you can shake a stick at... if they were to be believed. I told them if a three year old car had that many faults did they really think they'd ever sell me another? Took it down the road and it passed for the next two years on all, but brake pads and tyres!

After second MOT, times were hard and they repossessed my baby or I'd still have it now!

Good little car, comfortable, higher spec than normal as it is a Famous 5 version. Noisy at speed (turn up the stereo) Now giving it to my daughter. Heavy on steering and tyres.
