2000 Renault Clio Grande 1.2 8V

Summary:

A very popular car, with generally good reliability. A bit of a shopping car though

Faults:

The car was purchased because of a recommendation of our family mechanic:

The radio and clock displays sometimes flickers for no apparent reason, getting a bit better after spraying WD-40 on all electricals under bonnet each week. The fault has rarely come back.

The rear wheel arches had rusted, even though the car had been washed and polished once a week all its life, and was kept in a garage. Fixed by sanding, priming and painting with thicker paint.

Driveshaft needs replaced at 66,000 miles due to a leaking driveshaft boot going unnoticed for years.

General Comments:

The car is quite nippy, but not a scratch on MK1 Clios.

The car had done barely anything for the last 5 years or so, and had just been doing local runs.

So when the car was purchased, the car ran rich and consumed a bit of oil, even after a full service.

A full bottle of Redex and half a tank of fuel, and a good long hard run, revving quite high, cleared all the junk out.

May just be a fluke, but the car runs a whole lot better now.

After a little TLC, this car has proved quite reliable so far, and most of its problems are down to human error.

However this car is much more modern and upmarket than the MK1 Renault Clios, but it has less character and does not give you a cheeky smile when you drive it.

An update to my earlier review.

After a few months of owning the car, quite a lot of things have gone wrong.

The handles of the seats have a mind of their own.

The engine is tappety, despite being serviced all its life.

There is a leak somewhere, causing the passenger footwell to be completely filled with water, and you could keep fish under the passenger seat.

The car just feels cheaply made and has no charm in my opinion. Disappointing in comparison to mk1 Clios, and the Clios that followed this. Where they went wrong, I do not know.

2000 Renault Clio 1.2

Summary:

Cheap little runner

Faults:

My boyfriend has a Renault Clio mark 2, and is constantly moaning about things that are wrong with it.

- Firstly, he has the rattling of the roof, which is really annoying. If he opens it, the sound seems to go away for a little while.

- His speedo plays up a lot; it either works, doesn't work at all, or shakes up and down.

- His back left lights has started to play up, his indicator won't work when he brakes, and his side light will flash if he puts it into reverse.

- The rear right side door will not open at all, he's had the panel off and fiddled around for hours, still nothing.

- He has recently blown this amplifier, which wasn't due to using it too much, as it hasn't been in use since before Christmas.

- The electrical fault light always comes on, but nothing seems to be wrong.

The passenger's side window cannot be opened on the passenger's side, but can be opened on the driver's side.

General Comments:

It's a lovely little runner when it wants to be. It was cheap for him until all these things started going wrong.

He has recently tried to put his car in for the MoT, but one garage refused to do it because of his door. But the garage he has gone to now has said they can open the door.

2000 Renault Clio 1.2

Summary:

Rubbish french car

Faults:

I do actually happen to like my Clio, but for the past YEAR I have had a problem with it! Whenever I drive it and slow down to a junction or put it in a lower gear, a light comes on the dashboard in the shape of a coil and my car cuts out.

It has been taken to a mechanic and plugged into a diagnostic machine, and it doesn't say what's wrong with it. It has had lots of parts put in to try and fix it, but it never works. However finally, we have found out what is wrong with it. It is something to do with the throttle. I have had a second hand part put in as a new one costs £300!! But unfortunately the second hand part doesn't work, so we are going to have to pay for the brand new part. Hopefully this will work, as every time I drive my car I fear for my life that I will have an accident!

After this problem has been fixed, I am selling it and am never buying a Clio again!
