2000 Renault Clio S 1.4 petrol 8-Valve

Summary:

Great little car with a friendly insurance group

Faults:

The spring has broken in the ashtray so it won't stay open.

Every time I go through the car-wash the front left sidelight stops working. A little tap and it's all sorted, but a bit irritating.

I have had the same brake light go twice in the last month.

The sunroof rattles and squeaks, but from reading reviews its not just mine.

General Comments:

The car is very quick. Its only a 1.4 8 Valve, but on a private test its 0-60 came in at about 9 seconds! I don't speed, but its nice to know its there when pulling back onto the A14 after refuelling.

Looks fantastic, but it's black so it's a real pain to keep clean.

Standard speakers are blaupunkt and really meaty. I bought infinity speakers and too them back because the originals sounded better.

I do about 280 miles a week and it costs roughly £30 on petrol. quite impressed.

Brake light bulb: I had the same problem with a Toyota Carina e. It was cured by purchasing a good quality bulb from a Motor Factors, rather than the cheepies supplied at the local garage.

My Clio S lights are OK to date, but I have only had the car for about 4 weeks now.

2000 Renault Clio 1.2

Summary:

Would not buy another one!

Faults:

Misfiring fault

Replacement Engine Management System.

General Comments:

OK overall.

1.2 16v engine underpowered.

Now prooving to be very expensive and only 29000 miles on the clock.

2000 Renault Clio Sport 1.4i

Summary:

A nice run-around when it works

Faults:

Washer jets front and back broken since had the car.

Drivers side electric window regulator went at 29,000 miles, very very costly 250 from Renault! Managed to get the part on-line for £60.

Wheel bearing went at 30,000 miles, about £90 to fix.

Exhaust fell off at current mileage.

Interior very squeaky.

Sunroof rattles very annoying on long journeys.

Poor body work very easily picks up dents and scratches from other people in car parks.

General Comments:

Apart from the poor build quality I do like the car, It defiantly goes and does so very comfortably.

The seats are very good offering much support. It may take a while for tall men to obtain a comfortable position, but once you get it you can sit for a long while comfortably.

Gear box can be a bit stiff at certain times, but generally nice to use.

A nice looking car and my classmates certainly were impressed.

Tire's arnt the best, but cheap to replace.

Stereo very good even if it is a tape player. 6 Speakers off good sound at all frequencies and volumes.

Well another thing has gone on the car since I posted this, a cable inside the door must of gone that connected the inside door handle to the lock mechanism, and I can't open the door from the inside, I have to wind down the window and open it from the outside! Never trust a Renault!

I agree on the build quality. Wait till you get an electrical fault, like I just have. Wouldn't touch another Clio with a bargepole!!!

2000 Renault Clio MTV 1.2

Summary:

Good little car just with small faults

Faults:

Leaking sunroof.

In the old style clio approx 1998 Model, the leaking sunroof caused a lot of problems with the immobiliser! Its a pain trying to find where the water is coming in from.

General Comments:

Good car until the winter! Dealer found trouble locating where the leak was.

2000 Renault Clio Alize 1.4

Summary:

Average small car with poor reliability

Faults:

The ignition coils failed (each plug has an individual coil). All four were replaced and one had to be replaced twice. Renault did reimburse us, however, as it is a known fault.

The gearbox went through phases of serious difficulty in changing gear, particularly changing down into 2nd.

General Comments:

The engine - a 16 valve 1.4 litre - supposedly generated 98bhp. I find this very hard to believe as it performs more like a 1.2.

Not much room in the back.

Handling is average.

Fuel economy is also average.

A few design idiosyncrasies such as the driver seat adjustment handle being on the wrong side: it's difficult to reach the handle to push the seat back until you get your legs in; getting your legs in is difficult if the seat is forward.
