Style and comfort in one package

Quite well built for a french car.

Silky smooth ride quality.

Good strong performance and fuel economy.

Really annoying immobiliser, not very user friendly.

The Laguna was underrated. My neighbor had his 15 years, not as unreliable as people made them out to be.

1995 Renault Laguna RN 1.8

Summary:

Nice shape, but too many problems

Faults:

The radiator fan switch threads disappeared when I unscrewed it. Presume the threads must have fallen into the radiator!!

Overheats when travelling anything above 70mph.

Overheats in traffic.

Power steering oil leak. Top up every week.

Immobiliser stopped working and I couldn't start may engine. Cost £90 to by pass and a week off the road.

Does not like stop starts, engine revs like crazy (2000rpm) for 5 minutes. This is embarrassing at traffic lights.

General Comments:

Doesn't handle too well.

1995 Renault Laguna RN 1.8

Summary:

Good value, comfortable saloon

Faults:

The Bonnet does no open, it only opens when you get underneath it and mess with the lock. A part from that nothing else, I have not had the car for that long. Everything in the car works.

General Comments:

Comfortable inside.

Its very good on the motorway cruises along very nice.

Acceleration is average.

Good value, they can be bought cheap. MPG is not great it does quote 31mpg, but I get over 50 miles for £10 worth or 25mpg, mostly due to driving in built up areas.

The car has loads of body roll I don't know if that is a bad thing because it is a load of fun and it still sticks to the road and remains comfortable.

Gearbox is not that slick a bit clunky at times.

Insurance group not bad only in group 7 for a 1.8.

1995 Renault Laguna RT 1.8 petrol

Summary:

A decent family car which came to an untimely end

Faults:

Gearbox got stuck in third gear after 77,000 miles and had to be replaced.

Both front window motors failed after 80,000 miles, also needing to be replaced.

General Comments:

In the 15 months that I owned the Laguna, it gave me fairly reliable and economical motoring at a good price. It was six years old when I bought it for £3,250. Joyriders then stole and burnt it and I received a disappointing £2,250 in insurance money. The Laguna had a good few years left in it, but those thieves finished it off well before its time.

Easy, cheap, reliable

Faults:

Heated rear screen electrics need replaced.

Heater plug relay doesn't work.

Lower seat clips broken - common fault.

Knocking from front suspension, needed a bottom ball joint.

General Comments:

The car is comfortable, seats are comfortable for all.

Car is excellent on the motorway, easily cruising at around 90+ mph.

No A/C so the cabin can be very hot in summer.

Car almost never gets serviced and has never been in a Renault dealership.

This car is built like a van, even the wheel bearing are about the same size as used on a van.

1995 Renault Laguna RT 1.8

Summary:

All in all a good solid family car

Faults:

I have a fault with my fuel gauge. It flickers between empty and quarter full even after I have fulled it up.

The heater won't give out warm air.

Any assistance with these faults would be greatly appreciated.

General Comments:

Apart from these minor faults the car is floor-less. It comfortable and easily accommodates my wife and two children. Performance is not its strong point, but once up to speed will quite happily let you acquire 3 points and a fine from the local constabulary!!

All in all a good solid family car.

I own a Renault and had the fuel gauge problem. Remove the unit from the fuel tank in the boot and simply replace the plastic float on the end of the wire arm. What happens the float becomes punctured and will not float thus giving an untrue reading. You will get a secondhand float at any scrapyard for a few bob. It does not necessary have to be a Renault float. A garage quoted me £150 for replacing the complete unit which is not necessary. You only require the small plastic float.
